And the same here...

And the error message tells me too that the "update.esm" is a higher version than the exe can handle.

I guess, that has something to do with the just available 1.8 udate and we will probably have to wait until the CK gets an update too.

If 1.8 did indeed just go live then you cannot mod using update.esm until the CK is updated to handle it.

Glad I saw this and made a copy of my old v1.7 Update.ESM first...

I have mine set to not update the game and it deleted Update.esm anyway. Sneaky way to force you to update the game. But why on earth would they be so stupid as to release the update to the game without doing the CK at the same time. You know they have it ready to go. They used it to make the new Update.esm. Just more silly BS.

I have several backup Skyrim directories and Update.esm and Update.bsa were deleted from those as well. WTF?

So I found an old copy of Update and started the CK and I got an installation warning for a Valve application, which I denied and the CK started right up. If anyone is wondering what will happen.

If Steam starts to update the game, you cannot open it or the CK until the update completes.

I don't think you can play the game without it updating first. When it connects to Steam to check your account, it is going to update. Save a copy of your Update.esm and Update.bsa first if you still have them to save. IF not, you should always keep backups of your Skyrim/Data directory in some place that Steam can't find it and mess with it.

And then I can't get the CK to run anything. It is getting localization errors. Geez. Why would they make this so hard? What could possibly be the purpose behind it?

Well, it deletes every file that has Update in the name in the entire game directory. There are more than Update.esm and bsa.

It's just something that they aren't paying attention too. That's all. We would need a good patch to Steam on Valve's part, along with a bit more preperation with update synchronizing on Bethesda's part. Hopefully we'll get the new CK tomorrow...

I just replaced the updated update.bsa & .esm with an older version from a backup. It seemed to work for now until the CK is updated.

And if finally worked for me too. After I just went ahead and let the game update, I was able to replace Update.esm and Update.bsa from an old copy and it worked fine. It just wouldn't work until I let It go ahead and do the update on the game.

Glad I made a backup before exploring mod cleaning with TES5Edit.
The ESM is the key file to make it work with swapping old and new around.

The next CK update probably isn't coming until next week. In the meantime, any mod that patch 1.8 breaks (and believe me, 1.8 DOES in fact break mods, particularly race overhaul mods) is hopelessly broken for the next few days. This also means that if your mod uses Update.esm as a master, you can't work on that during the next few days, either. :swear: Not without workarounds, anyway.

-Close the CK
-Open the game
-Update the game
-Open CK again
-Done!
You got that right. Try and open a file using Update.esm as a master, and the editor will crash.

Is it best when making a mod NOT to use update as a master? What are the pros and cons?

I have never used Update.ESM, but I 'never' edit vanilla objects. My mod contains changes only to my own records so there is never a conflict with the Update.ESM.

Well, my partner's and my mod is using Dawnguard and Update esm, so we had a little scare. Fortunately, one of us had backup data folders. The work continues.
