Can I train my horse to run from danger, please...

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 2:52 am

so... not that we haven't beat this dead... well you know...enough, but I'm riding Shadowmere around last night, feeling quite badazz.. come across a simple tower with a few bandits... no problem, I'll hop off and have a little exercise.. So I hop off the horse, and he proceeds to literally climb the steps and ramps of the tower all the way to the top, confronting each bandit... I can't get past him because his huge rear end is blocking the doorways of course, so I'm like "uh.. 'scuse me there Shadowmere, can I slip by so I can slay the bandit please? rather do the dirty work myself if you don't mind... smithed these snazzy ebony swords and daggers just for that purpose.." Freakin' horse litereally climbed the whole tower all the way to the bandit leader.. I could not get around him... had to sneak arrow shots in when I could get a clear shot...

so I emplore a change with an future update.... just make the horses run from combat for Pete's sake... and put a marker on my map with where the stupid beast is after the fight is done, so I don't have to walk around the forest like an idiot looking for my horse. or better yet, let me whistle for him when I want him.. please.. thank you...

I feel the same way, I entered a fight with a dragon and two giants with my horse feeling like a god or something and decided to test his might against these foes as well. The outcome was not so great for the horse, and it wasn't shadowmere so the horse was gone forever. If the horse would have just waited where I got off of him, he wouldn't have died and caused me to load up an auto-save. :wallbash:

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I don't use horses, although mounted combat will eliminate some of this frustration for me.

I wish they would impliment horse commands and as the OP mentioned, a map marker to make it easier to locate. Would be nice to stable a horse for a price.

You should use the mod "Horse commands". You'll find it on the Nexus or on Steam. You'll be able to teach your horse to flee from combat and when you'll get off of him, he'll follow you on the way. There's also a whistle you can use if your horse goes too far when he flees from combat. The new version add other things I'm not using. :)

Unfortunatly not all of us play on PC. That would be a great mod for them to impliment as dlc for consoles.

the Calm Spell is actually a good call.. I may try that.. although in this instance I would not have been fast enough.. I appreciate the horse's zeal, but he literally just bee-lines for a fight. I get it that it's his "demeanor" being shadowmere and all, but I've had normal horses do it too..

And, as commented above. I'm on 360 as well, so no mods for me :(

I agree...they really need to takes notes from red dead redemptions horses. Not only did they handle nicely but the fact you can whistle for them and they would run from danger like real horses was on point and i wish horses were even remotely like that in skyrim

As they are now makes me never want to climb on one...horseback combat shouldnt even be thought about until horses are fixed

I think it's the Red Dead Redemption Horses that make me so dissapointed with them in Skyrim.. they could have just been so epic, but fell way short. mounted combat will be a step in the right direction... next time I encounter that tower with the bandits after the 1.6 patch... I'll just shoot 'em all from horseback :)

I also agree whith people who say "I just don't use them". I I generally go in waves, sometimes use horses, sometimes not. but for me, they should be a bigger part of the game and I want to use horses a lot. Listening to Todd Howards DICE keynote speach, it sounds as if Bethesda made the conscious decision to not emphasize them, which for me personally is a shame. The Skyrim world just seems like horses would be a big part of it.

Yes the gung ho attitude of the horses gets irritating.

Also no way to call your horse?
Thats shockingly remiss imo.

In RDR you could whistle, in Zelda you could whistle, it's a basic expectation for any game with horses in it... and considering how often I've left my horse behind in a snowstorm because it was too much effort to find him after he'd ran after a spider... I think a way to call your horse is top of the list after making them less kamikaze.

Although I hated that sort of glitch on red dead where you whistled for your horse and tried to get on it would move further away every time you got near it.

Horses were definitely a step back from OB. They aren't even that much better graphically.

Haha this exact thing happened to me, that horse likes a fight! Would be good if you could slap him/her and make her run off.

but yea horses need.help in skyrim...i vote drop horses and focus on making new better mounts

Yeah it would be nice. I'm debating whether to upgrade my PC so I can get some of the great mount mods. Riding a spider looks awesome. They have added mounted combat in already and Todd mentioned horse whistling and things in a n interview so you never know what might be done. My wishlist for more mounts is; first person mounts, mount armour, non suicidal horses, better looking horses and the ability to whistle for them.

My escapades with Shadowmere continued last night :) I did try the Calm spell on him, but he was too powerful and resisted it LOL.. but this time, we were taking on a dragon together.. I'll give the horse credit, he is a tough SOB.. did not die, and he was toe-to-toe with a frost dragon. I actually let him take quite a bit of abuse before putting the dragon down just because I wanted to see if he would die. but, he ended up down a mountain side once it was all done, and I just needed to fast travel to where I was at to get him back. the thing about Shadowmere compared to the other horses, is he does seem to be looking for a fight. I just barely get off of him, and he bolts for whatever enemy is near.

I think I'm just going to start leaving him behind and walking places.. Skyrim needs a Human Society where I can drop of my horse for adoption...
