Can you still improve weapons with smithing with no perks?

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 11:48 am

Ok I just have been trying out smithing but am a little confused as I wanna improve a couple of enchanted weapons I have, so I can do this with just 2 perks in the tree right? I don't really wanna make stuff just improve so what's best way please?

Correct.
You can improve stuff without perks, only 50% less. All you need is the "enchanted smithing" (or whatever its called).

You have to get lvl 60 smithing to improve enchanted gear. If you can do that on improving all the stuff you find before you sell it it'd be a pain in the ass. You kill lots of wolves and stuff that gives leather, leather bracers. And sell them. Decent pocket change and levels smithing really well. Once you get to dwemer stuff though, hands down most plentiful. First one I went to my first run picking up the solid metals and the plates got me almost a hundred dwemer bars, and then make the dwemer bows. Only requires one other material. Iron or Steel one.

There are 6 levels of improvements you can do with blacksmithing: fine, superior, exquisite, flawless, epic, legendary.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Smithing

If you only take the perk to improve magic gear, the best improvement you can do is up to flawless. So you are missing out on the legendary improvement.

You can't do Epic or Legendary without perks as they take 150 and 200 skill without the perk, respectively. You can't have more than 100 skill.

Also, without the Heavy Armor perks, you can't improve anything beyond leather and iron.

Yes and no. I might be wrong but I believe you can raise your Smithing skill above 100 with potions and enchantments.

Like I said, might be wrong.

I only have arcane smithing, and I have epic improved ebony armor. You just need +smithing gear.

You can enchant gauntlets, rings, amulets and boots with +smithing, which will increase your skill past 100 if you already have it maxed. it takes 150 smithing skill to enhance armor to epic if you don't have perks. You don't need perks to enhance armor besides iron/leather, that's false.

Thanks for the reply! But if I really wanna improve my gear to the max, then I need all perks right?

I'm not sure... You could probably get 200 smithing with +25% smithing boots, gauntlets, ring and necklace, then you shuold be able to upgrade to legendary without the perks. I just didn't try :)

If you want to improve your Dwarven gear to the max, then you need 100 Smithing + the Dwarven perk.

100 Smithing WITHOUT the perk related to the type of gear you're trying to improve will let you improve it to "Flawless" quality.

100 Smithing WITH the perk related to the type of gear you're trying to improve will let you improve it to "Legendary" quality.

Quality levels are (in ascending order):

Fine
Superior
Exquisite
Flawless
Epic
Legendary

The first four are obtainable without perks, but the last two require you to have the perk related to the gear you're trying to improve.

Yes but with the perks and smithing gear, you can improve it beyond legendary. It will still be called legendary but the armor rating/damage will be higher.

Right you probably can if your enchanting is good enough. I'll have to experiment with that, it's an interesting idea to be able to fully upgrade with no smithing perks. I know in the 50s or so I'm at now with enchanting I can do about 20% archery on an item, so if the value is the same I don't think 25% smithing would be difficult to pull off.

Oh! Neat. That's good for the folks that actually take the perks then.

Ok so when I get onto daedric gear this is best with perks as will be 50% more effective right? But what about enchanted weapons? There is no perks for them after arcane smithing so do I just need a higher smithing skill to upgrade these more please?

Unfortunatley it seems like all of the unique weapons like my favorite the Ghostblade can't be improved past (Flawless) Rubbish! I was a little sad when I had to hang her up on my wall because she was too weak to continue using. Long live Skysteel!

Jesus christ. How hard is it to read the tooltip.

Ignore the [censored] label at the end of the weapon. Exquisite, Flawless, Epic, Legendary don't matter.

No matter what your Smithing, you can improve any item in the game by X, based on your Smithing skill level.

If you have the perk that matches the item type, you improve it by 2 * X. TWO TIMES X. DOUBLE. TWICE AS MUCH.

SMITHING SKILL = IMPROVEMENT AMOUNT. IT CAN GO PAST 100.

SMITHING PERK = DOUBLE IMPROVEMENTA MOUNT. HOW COOL IS THAT.

Sorry, missed your post. As mentioned, you can definitely improve to legendary without perks, if you have enough +smithing gear. You just need +100% smithing altogether, and to have 100 smithing. If you have the perk, apparently it will just be a "better" legendary and have a higher bonus.

So basically, if I like the look of Hide and Leather armors the best I can improve them to is Flawless (since there's no associated perk with them)? Or am I missing something?
