Cannot Play FNV

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 4:28 am

Hi.

I bought FNV yesterday, is there anyway to play it without needing to use steam? that service has some very serious downsides for me.

This is the first game I've owned that uses steam, and its been nothing but a headache, I'm on a dial up connection so it took me 3 hours to install it since you don't provide a complete working package of the game on the DVD, but with said and done I "finally" got the game installed and was able to play it last night.

With all my download problems kinda out the way I now face another one, your 300mb download took me over my fair use policy, not such a biggy but.... steam never saved my login password even though the check box was defiantly marked (I don't use UAC and do login as admin on my machine) so I cannot even run steam in offline mode as it didn't save my password, but your using the internet right now I imagine your thinking (lol) and you'd be right I am, but steam must be trying to download files to check if it needs updated or something before it logs in so it keeps failing, now I'm stuck until my download limit resets which is over 2 weeks =(

Is there any chance of you (if your reading) providing an exe that verifies my DVD and lets me play without that piece of crap called steam? (wanted to use a naughty word) probably not so should I take it back in the morning, probably so lol I need help man this is just cruel, I've installed it, did all the downloading surely there must be something that can be done, seriously man if this is the way PC gaming is going game company's are gonna loose shed loads of money, there's already cracked versions of the game on the internet your just gonna loose more money from the people in my position.

I'm not a happy chappy, its not fair if it keeps going this way I'll not be able to play anything on my PC soon, you cannot keep using steam, its evil =(

I installed fine from the disc. You must have done something wrong during the initial setup if it decided to download.

As for password, does it not let you enter it?

That svcks... Unfortunately the system requirements include steam and steam itself requires a broadband connection. It says to right on the box

I think it's ignorant for publishers to forget that most of the world connects to the internet through less than broadband speed but they do it to curb piracy and increase profit margins. Ideally, one would think you'd be able to play offline right off the disc but that's not the case. The disc doesn't include the exe (again to prevent pre-release date piracy) and you are forced to install updates. In some games (grand theft auto iv comes to mind) the updates aren't always a good thing either

It let me install from the disk fine, but after the install it said it wasn't ready to be played, it had to download updates before it was ready, it wouldn't even let me try to start it until it had updated.

steam lets me put my password in and tries to log in, but I'm guessing its trying to download something to check if everything is upto date and my ISP is blocking it so it fails to login =(

EDIT: I don't think not having broadband is the problem, it worked find yesterday, then again if the server is busy it could be? I'll plug my phone in and check.... oooo this could be costly lol

Hi diezil,

There seems to be something strange with the Steam setup in NV, but I own just one other Steam game because I definitely do not want to support this system and try to avoid such games whenever possible. However, it seems that in NV Steam is reacing differently than in "Napoleon", the other Steam game I own. "Napolean" is running fine in offline mode compared to NV. To get NV started in offline mode I had to update the game as described in the FAQ and troubleshooting sections at Steam that are dealing with playing offline. So I connected once to have a complete game/Steam update done and finished and then logged off.

To play in offline mode it then seems to be important that Steam is started with the autorun option when the PC is started. When I boot my PC and don't connect to the Internet Steam starts and says that it can't connect and gives me the chance to run in offline mode, which is working fine then.

The strange thing is that this does not seem to work when Steam is not loaded automatically. If I then launch the game Steam starts and refuses to run in offline mode because it needs to run an update. I don't know why, all settings are correct for playing offline, it just refuses to start without a prior update. This is not happening with "Napoleon" though, this game did always propperly start in offline mode without any problems.

Maybe someone knows a better way to resolve this, as mentioned I can't say that I know Steam very well. But I thought it could be a work around that works for you too for the time being.

Kind regards,

R.

Well its not because I don't have broadband, it let me log in fine with my phone as a modem (5kbs) so it must be my ISP, after looking through the steam log files it does indeed try to download/upload a file, maybe steam should anolise their login procedure to avoid the problem and be a bit more user friendly and avoid this, might go make a post on their website about it sometime.

@Rowlfs, glad to see someone shares my view about steam games lol, I've just tried restarting my computer to check if it saved my login details, it has woohoo, I didn't get that problem, its letting me run in offline mode fine, are you using latest steam client?

I still think they should give us a new exe for the DVD version though, there's already cracks of the game out there, what harm would it do, anyway, I'm off to have a little button bash, just need to figure out why the gunshot effects are going off ten minutes after I fire lol.

wonder what my mobile phone bill is going to be like lol.

EDIT: AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Its only saving my login info when I restart, when I shut down then power up, it wipes them =(
@Rowlfs I do get that problem, only after shutting down though, if I simply restart it works, I hate steam!!!!!!!

Sorry diezil,

I only had this when not having the game updated once and not auto-loading Steam and trying to play the game offline. Then it was always asking for the account information (which was wiped) and refused to run without connecting to the Internet first. This strange behaviour stopped after I completed one update session and then used the autorun function of the Steam client when booting the PC. When the system is starting now and Steam is loading it tells me that no internet connection is available and whether I want to play offline or end the Steam client.

I'm not quite sure about the Steam version, didn't see any "about" or other tab where this is shown. The system says it's 1.0.0.0 but I'm not sure if that's reliable information.

I don't know if this makes any difference (I assume that your PC is not automatically connected to the Internet when its started) but I blocked the Steam client in my Firewall settings, so it can't connect on startup.

The way Steam is working also doesn't seem to match what the package says (it only says that an Internetconnection and cost-free Steam account is required for activation of the product). If you can activate the product but can't play it without being connected or loading the client you may be entitled to get a refund, I don't know. I'm enjoying Bethesda products since the good old DOS "Terminator", but if they continue to use Steam in the future I do not think that I will buy another game, even though I would really miss their games. On the other hand - UBI soft is even worse, forcing you to stay online all the time...
