Cannot play game at all : V

Hi,

My friend bought me Skyrim for my birthday on Wednesday and I finished downloading it last night. I hit Play on Steam, and the launcher popped up after it had to do some extra installing. So far, so good. But immediately I encounter a problem, just a lil' one. When I press Play, the launcher closes and the game does not appear. Steam says I am no longer in-game. Nothing happens at all. The game just doesn't appear.

I've tried running it as administrator (I'm the admin anyway but whatever

) but haven't tried anything else as I couldn't think of anything. Oh and I've restarted the PC and restarted the launcher several times.

Any help would be much appreciated.

By the way I searched for this problem on google and many people solved it by validating the files on Steam - tried that & doesn't work, just in case someone were going to suggest it.

D3D9 Overlay: Not Supported

That might have something to do with it... Try reinstalling directx.

I can do so, but it's working perfectly fine for other games, and Steam/Skyrim said it was installing some form of DirectX when I started up Skyrim.

Sorry for being a noob but there are bazillions of DX files on my computer - how do I reinstall it?

This a laptop?, looks like a shared resource, run the Skyrim launcher again, select options then click button for low settings, then see if it will play.

Nope, it's a desktop. I can try putting it to Low, but it automatically set it to High when I installed the game.
(It said high was the optimal graphics settings for my system)

I've never had any game that properly detected settings. There's just too many variables, to be honest.

Could you post the contents of your RenderInfo file in a spoiler tag, please? While you're at it, could you edit your dxdiag so that it's also in a spoiler tag? It's kinda hard to find information when you need to keep scrolling.

Click the option for more BBCode in the panel here and choose the spoiler tag.

Hm, just looked through Skyrim files and there isn't a RenderInfo file. Done a search of the whole PC and no "RenderInfo" files were found. Are they maybe called something else?

And after a long time searching i have found the spoiler tag bit

D3D9 Overlay: Not Supported That might have something to do with it... Try reinstalling directx.

My graphic card doesn't support D3D9 overlay either but I run Skyrim pretty well.

It's "RendererInfo.txt" and you'll find it in My documents/My games/Skyrim. Did you check the drivers of your graphic card? Are they up to date?

While you're in this folder, delete Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini and try the game.

What I'll find in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim is a Saves folder (empty ofcourse), the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files. No RenderInfo.txt. Nothing else at all.

And I believe my graphics card drivers are up to date yes. dxdiag doesn't mention they're not up to date and everything else (i play lots of games) works perfectly.

EDIT oh and deleting those files doesn't help either.

It looks like the game doesn't recognize your graphic card. In your Skyrim folder (ProgramFiles/Steam/SteamApps/Common), do you have an "atimgpud.dl"?

In the Device Manager under Display Adapters (at least, it was Display Adapters last time I checked I think >.>), could you list what all is under there? You could have some sort of conflict with an integrated chip or something.
