We cannot read the text from the couch.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:03 pm

We have a 20" HDTV. We can't afford a 52" TV. This has never bothered us before.
I am very disappointed to learn that Bethesda did not consider SDTV users. I will also very disappointed if Bethesda did not consider less affluent HDTV users either.

We need to sit about 4' from the display to read the text. Is there any way to enlarge the display text? I had my eyes checked six months ago. They simply aren't THAT bad.

Thank you. :)

agreed. text can be difficult to read at times. and i have a 40" HD... granted I am sitting about 15 feet away from the tv. regardless, it could be more legible.

Thanks for bringing that up, I agree. I have to squint half the time looking at my 42" hdtv and I'm probably 10-15 feet away. I mean, I can read it, but not easily. Not sure of a solution.

Specsavers!... no I'm joking I've been having some trouble reading the text as well it would be nice to have the option to increase text size I agree.

While it's not a problem for me to read the text in game, the text is quite tiny. I can see how some would be affected by this. There definitely should be size options for text.

Yeah, I can't tell how much gold I have or navigate properly because I can't see the arrows up the top. It makes playing very frustrating - but the lag of course is the worst. I've just hit 10mb, haven't even finished the game and can't move very far.

You can change the resolution on your PS3 system, you go to the display settings on your PS3 system and do a custom setup and choose a lower resolution - this will make the text a little bigger and more readable

I have this issue too. The music/sound effects sometimes gets in the way of hearing what the characters are saying because it is so thematic (which is otherwise a good thing. the Skyrim score is very very cool and does a great job of svcking the player into the game), so I use the subtitles - and with nearly perfect vision I still have to squint. I don't think asking us to change our resolution is a valid response either because that means downgrading the graphical quality of the entire game - which is s shame because it is so beautiful. A font-size slider of some kind needs definitely be introduced to the options menu. Not sure I understand why the console version of the game is given such limited player control over matters like this - the ps3 is essentially just a very specialized gaming computer - so what necessity prompts the severely sparse menu settings, really?

If you are playing Skyrim on a 20" HDTV you will not see any noticeable difference in graphic quality by choosing a lower resolution - in any way you will have to find out if you can live with a lower resolution to be able to read the text for now since there is no slider to change tie size of the text, I would think most players can live with a lower resolution, especially on a screen below 40"

Regarding the sound/music there is a slider which you can use to change the settings as you like it, and since you have trouble hearing the voice then you probably should keep this at max and turn all other except the master down a notch or two.

I am playing on a 46" HDTV at approx. 3.5m distance and still have problems to read the descriptions i.e. about potions when there are more than 3 lines (5 lines are not that rare). This could be done better!

That is still so not the point. Yes, there is no slider for text size in the game, or even a multiple choice between big, medium, and small. That is the problem that the first poster, the first repliers, and I are pointing out. Other games can manage to include this option and they aren't half as cool as Skyrim is supposed to be. I'm not about to sacrifice a pixel of the glory that is the Elder Scrolls World just so I don't scowl at my TV screen when I'm reading subtitles. Even the text in books and bounty notices, despite its script font, is somewhat larger and easier to read. We are only making a suggestion here for an option that is standard in many games and that will improve the quality of this game with no conceivable draw backs, so, as much as I appreciate your downsize the resolution suggestion for trying to provide a solution to players who can't wait for a patch, I refute it on the grounds that it is only a work around, and work around that does degrade the quality of the game overall at that. It's a small change, but evidently there are a number of us, and likely an even larger silent majority, who would like to see it implemented.

I'm playing on a 46" 1080p set from at least 10 feet away and I'm having no problems.

I also turn on the dialogue for the chat.

Yes, I agree that it would be desireable to be able to change the size of the text, but my reply was just an attempt at solving the problem for the person playing on a 20" screen - and I believe downscaling the resolution on the PS3 will solve this problem untill a potential patch is going live :)

It might just work out to be a viable temporary solution :goodjob: . On another note - whats with the white text? Half of Scyrim is covered in snow... Could we at least have a a little translucency behind the subtitles like we have in our dialog menu make it stand apart from the back ground? I am pretty sure that as much as small font might be a problem, trying to read the font when its white on a white back ground causes as much eye strain if not more.

I like the way this thread is 50% people boasting about their larger HDTVs and that they are having no problems or maybe slight problems from the other side of their equally large living space.

I am in possession of a larger HDTV but that is located in the family room that other family members wish to use during the day to watch tv, and they most likely wont be happy if i spend 10+ hours hogging the tv to play a game they have no interest in, so I use a SDTV thats in my room. I really wish font sizes could be adjusted as I just simply cannot read half the text. Surely a larger font option wouldn't be too hard to implement? I tried to tinker around with the ps3 display options that doesnt really seem to do much help either.

Also, some people are just being PC players about this issue. You guys hate the way PC players just say, 'well you should just buy a better graphics card/memory/sound card etc etc hurrdurr' not taking into consideration not all people can afford to spend more money after paying for a game that isnt exactly cheap either. Its not different when you tell someone to buy a new HDTV just for one game you're having problems with.

Thank you for the moral support.

Part of our delight in Skyrim is the visual beauty and detail. We will likely continue to strain our backs and necks rather than reduce the resolution.

I'll subscribe to this thread: if anything changes about this issue, please post for me.

Happy Thanksgiving(USA)!

-sols :)
