Cannot romance Lydia because...

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 1:27 pm

This is just a simple question/concern:

Is the reason why I cannot marry Lydia because I had already done her Favor before even buying the Amulet of Mara, thus, locking out the option of a potential marriage? I really have no interest in marrying her, but I was just curious because I'm able to "romance" other potential characters. All, of course, except her.

So, here I am asking! I thought it was interesting and perhaps worth a quick explanation. :)

Oops, my apologies! I didn't think that was a spoiler. I appreciate the heads up.

Another heads up: Don't marry Lydia.
Just saying. Constant yappin, Oprah watchin...

She is not the wife you're hoping for.
Again, just saying.

Mind sharing how you were able to trigger her personal quest?

I don't think she had a personal quest, per se, aside from what you experience in the main quest...

Meaning, after becoming Thane of Whiterun, in which the Jarl bestows the title upon you after slaying your first dragon, Lydia approaches you as you leave Dragonsreach and offers herself as your bodyguard/Housecarl.

Now, according to the strategy guide, Lydia is a potential love interest whom you can marry. However, having discovered that I needed the Amulet of Mara to woo the ladies of Skyrim, I realized I had long since accomplished Lydia's Favor that was required before romancing - the Favor/condition being that I needed to become Thane of Whiterun, which I already was.

So, as you can see, I felt because I had fulfilled the conditions of her Favor beforehand, she was thus unable to be romanced even with the Amulet of Mara on.

The wiki just added that:

"There is currently a bug where you can't marry her, even if you have the Amulet of Mara."

Don't know if it's true or not though. Seems like it is though as I'm in the same boat.

I think the guide is wrong. I don't think you can actually marry her.

Have you actually married her or are you confusing that with her just following you around?

Haha, probably. That guide is too big to be perfect!

But yeah, it could be a bug too as well. Who knows? Eh, she really wasn't on my top 3 list anyway!!! At least, anymore...

Ah, yet again someone who claims they've married her but will provide no further details. Beginning to think they're all trolls.

I am curious as well. She has been a great bodyguard for my redguard spellsword, and he is interested in her. He became thane before obtaining the amulet and has options with other females, but not her. Curious if this is a bug, or if the guide is wrong.

Do you have a house? i know there is a bug, but that may have something to do with it in your case, i will try this and if not, i will try to get with Mjoll the lioness. Mjoll's friend can stay as long as he doesn't try anything with her. that is if Lydia is bugged.

I have a fully upgraded house in Whiterun. Still no good. I think it is bugged.

With Mjoll I would kill Aerin first. It's just creepy with him following your spouse around. Apparently they were living together in Riften. I can not find any quest that connects them though and can not determine if they were siblings or lovers. Strange that he would follow her around after you are married in either case.
