Cannot use the Creation Kit

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 6:21 am

Alright, I've been playing Elder Scrolls and Fallout games on PC for a few years now, and have been using the Constriction Sets/GECK for almost as long. I have used the same PC/TV set up for all that time, and life has been good. Now I've started delving into Skyrims Creation Kit, and I've come across the single most ridiculous problem ever. Running at a resolution of 1280x768 does give enough space to be able to use any edit windows.

I wanted to try and give my Orc the 25% Magicka Resistance he had in MW/OB, but I can't see, or get to, the bottom of the window of the Ability screen to change values or even save the changes. I'm new to the Creation Kit, so there may be a way around this, does anyone know how to lower the Kits resolution, or add a scrollbar to the windows? This is a ridiculous problem that shouldn't exist.

The windows can be resized like a browser window.

Also I believe in any text field in the window you can just press Enter and it'll be like you clicked OK.

Actually, you'll find only a select few can - Most of the edit dialogs are fixed in size.

@OP, look for a tool called "Resize Enable" on Google. It might help you out.

I have this problem with the Alias window, bottom is cut off so i can't hit the OK/Cancel buttons. I always have to just click the top bar to select the window and hit the enter key to close it. Pretty annoying.

The skyrimEditorPrefs.ini allows for manually changing the default sizes of about any window in the CK.. but I dunno if it actually works, I never tried it. If it does, it may not let you scroll down for the missing options, but I hope it does.. I have a similar issue with certain windows (which I also just click on the edID name and press enter to ok/save out of it). Lemme know if it works!

Only a handful of windows can be resized that way. Besides, changing the width/height through the INI will only update the layout of the window's child controls if it supported resizing in the first place.

Yes, unfortunately this is a known issue. Bethesda appears to have assumed that everyone uses a monitor with a minimum height resolution of 1080. The only known fix, as far as I know, is to get a new monitor. Great, isn't it?

That svcks the INI won't help - I just saw a bunch of windows' lines there and hoped for the best heheheh. But I've been doing a lot of data anolysis for decoding the structure of records and subrecords in plugins... when messing with WATR (water types), there are 18 blocks of data I cannot identify because the stupid window isn't big enough. Can't scroll down, can't resize, and can't even drag it up off the screen in the slightest... I wish they'd fix THAT instead of adding krap like a slider for the time of day. My laptop goes up to 1366x768, which I keep it set at.. is it unrealistic to think some of us only have a single, lowHD screen and not some $50000 setup? It isn't like I'm running 640x480 from the 80s/90s....

Actually, these days you can easily find new 1920x1080 monitors for less than $200 (sometimes a lot less). When my old monitor on my PC at home died and needed to be replaced, I found that monitors are so inexpensive now that I went ahead and bought two 1920x1080 flat panels and use them in a multi-monitor setup.

However, as an alternative, shademe's suggestion does work. I did this when I was on vacation and didn't have a monitor available to plug into my laptop.
