Carebears and Munckinland

Post » Wed Jun 26, 2013 7:34 am

Having never played in an MMORPG, I would consider myself a 'Carebear'. My online experience (on my PS3 with some shoot 'em ups) is that the place is overrun by 12 year olds, who have all the time in the world to practice and rack up huge resources and who have a better (younger) twitch response. This inevitably results in this munchkin hanging around to kill me when I respawn for the 20th time. Funny at first. Tiresome after the third time. I'm keen to get into PvP, but will, no doubt, become frustrated by these little demons. Is there anything that EOS will do differently to contain this. Or will I just end up walking away, as I have done in the past. Maybe games like this are not for me. Although, as a individual with a keen interest in the Elder Scrolls franchise and substantial disposable income, I suspect that i'm just the sort of punter that EOS is aimed at.

I'll leave PvP details to someone more knowledgable. What I can tell you though is that you don't have to engage in PvP if you don't want to - it only takes place in Cyrodiil, so if you stay in your faction's territory you won't be attacked. No need to give up on the game entirely. :)

If you don't want to be tirelessly ganked all the time by people, then you should avoid Cyrodiil. Cyrodiil is the only place in the game where PvP is enabled. Everywhere else in the game is 100% PvE with no PvP involved (mainly due to the fact that you won't see any enemies whenever you are PvEing). Now you can still go into Cyrodiil to PvE, but I would recommend sticking around your factions controlled territories. Now that doesn't mean you still won't be killed, but you will more than likely die less in an area that your faction holds then just running around in the open.

It wont matter if you die.. you'll re-spawn with all your still and maybe a scrapped knee or something. Just brush yourself off and enjoy a carefree experience where everyone is the hero and no one really has to worry about losing anything.

Thank you very much for all of your prompt replies.

I realise that I might have sounded like a bit of a wimp.

I'm keen to get involved in PvP. I've just been frustrated in the past.

I'll be playing on my PS3, so I don't know if I'll encounter any of you.

I'm a long time Mac user and games were rarely, if ever published for it.

Hence the console route.

I hope that the game doesn't have to be dumbed down to accommodate us.

It will be interesting to see if there will be any cross-platform as well.

I'm also intrigued by the word 'Ganked'.

This is why I love the English language.

Well the game comes out for PS4, not PS3. It also comes out on the Mac as well as PC and the Xbox 180. So if you have a decent Mac you could get it for that. Mac and PC play together so you don't haveto worry about low populations or anything of the sort.

After losing a good amount in Las Vegas I might just be getting the game for PS4, which I am getting either way. Lol, [censored] Vegas.

Re: Dominating 12 year old game wizards

I'm 32. I'm fat, my knees hurt and my eyes use glasses that belong on a great-grandfather. Other than old man strength, which has no benefit online, I have only 1 advantage over them. It's not time. It's not speed. It's not even aggression.

It's situational intelligence.

Most game dominators react like most bullies when the going gets tough. They lose their minds in anger and often self destruct. Especially kids. Use your experience that you've gained over the years and don't let them annoy you into quitting.

In Madden this means screens vs blitzes. In FIFA it's 5 men on defense. In COD it's concentrating on keeping your death total low as opposed to your kill total high. Take what they give you and don't freak out. That's what they want. Eventually their frustration will undo them.

As for TESO try this. Use teammates as bait. Let them get killed by the crazy 12 year old who plays 22 hours a day. Then, once the youngster has committed himself to murdering your teammates, sneak attack him from the bushes. He'll call you a newb. He'll scream racist taunts that his mother would ground him for. He'll yell about how the game is nerfed. He'll quit. And you ... you'll call defeated.

May the Hist guide you.

Indeed. I might try it on my Mac. Although Mouse and keys to play games with... feels alien.

Despite assurances that allows for better and faster play

most of your "12-year-olds" are grown up men and women that just don't fancy having a family or any other hobbies.
just like if your go to the ballpark... there won't be 12-year-olds which do nothing except playing ball but 35-year-olds which do nothing except playing ball...

Ganking usually implies a higher level better equipped player killing a lower level, less than outstandingly equipped player. Or a group of higher level better equipped players ganging up on a lower level character. In Skyrim terms you just started the game with leather armor and an iron sword, and the other guy is level 80, wearing full enchanted daedric armor with enchanted daedric weapons. You have no chance. There are players who apparently live for the chance of slaughtering new players who can't really fight back.

Which is why I'm personally happy that you can't kill other players in your own faction, and pvp is restricted. I've seem people posting in some of these threads who apparently don't want to bother with anything in the game besides killing other players.

Good point Accolon but the tactics remain the same. There is a lore book in Skyrim I once read that said basically "any warrior can win a fight with the best tools in his arsenal but a true master will win a battle with as little effort as possible."

I say this because regardless of age most people who exploit games rarely have a second trick in thier bags. If you learn to defend whatever exploit is most common then you'll win 85% of battles before the first spell is cast.

In FIFA it's the lobbed thru ball. In Madden it's the nano blitz. Some super aggressive tactic will rise to popularity in TESO. Only someone willing to work hard at the unpopular, like 5 in the back in FIFA, will defeat them. And in time that person will become the true ruler of Tamriel.

May the Hist guide you.
