Carmack asks "what exactly is wrong with mouse accelerat

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 1:02 am

Well this one slipped out - they don't know what you guys were talking about that.

My own bug: 1. Mouse Senetivity is crazy in "accept or decline" quest menu.

I am not a guy who even detects mouse acceleration , it's weird i never felt it any game and i don't know where it is wrong - maybe i already disabled it in windows when i installed OS a year ago , idk.

This will go into the big "what id needs to fix" list - will post link there as well.

Surely they must have noticed the mouse is too sensitive in the UI...

This is my only real issue with the game at the moment, but it's not in just the quest menu it's in ALL menus as well as making Rage Frenzy a real pain in the ass to play. The mouse is blatantly emulating an anolog stick here... if I move the mouse normal speed the cursor barely moves, yet if I speed up my mouse movements the cursor then starts moving way too fast :(

Outside of the menus the mouse movement is fine.

Get a RAZER mouse and you'll have no mouse problems, I use the copperhead and it works Great. peace

Advertising overrated, overpriced mice doesn't help in any way. "Get a new mouse" is not an even remotely viable solution to a problem with mouse movement in the menus of a single game.

Congrats, you just won the "most useless post of the day" award.

I also find it a little too fast in the menus, so I just drag the mouse a little slowly, or use the keyboard instead (arrow keys et.c).

Christ...don't they know what is wrong???...amazing.

The menu management is flawless with gamepad but with mouse you must move nanometers with the slow precission of a Neurosurgeon. That's what is wrong.

I use a Logitech trackball mouse.

At first it was very difficult to select menu options because the cursor would fly all over the place, but after disabling mouse acceleration in windows and reducing the speed to "slow," then dialing up the in-game mouse sensitivity setting to about 75%, it is working perfectly for me.

I just have to remember to adjust mouse acceleration settings in windows again after I exit the game.

yeah i heard much about it but i never actually --- disabled it like seriously

i saw that this is a windows thing and it can be disabled and games cannot use it or what , imo , never really realize how it feels off and how on.

acceleration seems like mouse gets faster after some time ... well that doesn't sound good for gaming imo

Console ports are particularly famous for having this kind of mouse acc. Some games are outright unplayable.
I think I've got positive acceleration ingame, haven't really looked into it, but menus and UI, wow, dear god. Just trying to play that card game gives me a headache.

I mean, hey, FPS games are about shooting people in the face and feeling awesome, so why not let people choose whether or not they want mouse acc?
May console users die in fires, etc.

/E: Vsync, AA and AF all contribute to that "mouse lag feeling" in general. Vsync being mandatory and all doesn't really help though.

I also find it quite irritating to purchase items from vendors. The slightest touch of the mouse sends the cursor to the edge of the screen. (using Windows XP and a Logitech Mx518)

This is a bug in all menu's, not just the accept or decline menu. And this isnt anything to do with sensitivity or acceleration, its because the mouse skips a large amount of pixels as it moves.

I don't see why people are posting their mouse either. Next thing people are going to be saying is "I'm wearing Rayban glasses and the game looks jacked up!" or "I was drinking graqe soda when this occurred! Is it related?"

If your mouse needs drivers to function like a mouse should, then you got a P.O.S. mouse. The only thing a mouse should need drivers for is to support macro's, a wider array of buttons, or reassigning the button behavior on it.

The mouse cursor is too fast in all menus and lags (it isn't precise).

I don't think that's entirely accurate, but I'm no expert. I know my mouse has buttons that allow you to flip between several DPI levels. Switching between these has great effect on how fast the cursor moves in relation to the distance the mouse moves.

My guess: The mouse is having acceleration in menus and it is probably caused by using integer to store the value between mouse updates or translates each mouse update into [x,y] coordinates onscreen, so the sub-pixel precision is lost due to floor function and low menu sensitivity. Use a double to store accumulative mouse movement updates and transfer the integer part of the movement data whenever it reaches 1 or more pixels. It seems to be hz related as well. With 1000hz the cursor will not move at all when mouse is moved slowly, at 500hz it will occasionally register movement movement when the mouse is moved slowly and at 125hz the game registers cursor movement in the menus even when you move the mouse slow. Most likely due to incoming mousepackets containing movement data for a larger timeframe when using lower hz on the USB link.

Well, the problem with mouse acceleration is the [censored] mouse acceleration. I don't expect Carmack to maintain the enthusiasm of two decades ago, but I didn't think he would be that disconnected from PC gaming either.

If I may say so without getting pelted with stones, there is no mouse acceleration issue for me. Using Logitech LX8 cordless mouse. My brother has a cheapy no-name brand mouse and has no acceleration problems either. Maybe it's just a personal preference problem? Hopefully next patch will allow people to tweak mouse sensitivity.

@erk. If they used DirectInput or XInput, then they are probably using a DIMOUSESTATE object, and the deltas for mouse movements are type LONG for each axis. Sub-precision mouse movements? Hz related? Client pixel deltas at < 60 hz refresh rates are good enough for Windows and so should be good enough for Rage's menus. There is probably a much simpler explanation.
