Cartoony?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 10:36 pm

From the video on youtube I have seen, I am concerned this game is taking visual cues from cartoony games and comics, I'm basing this judgement mainly on the orc we see.

I hope they stick with the realistic approach of Skyrim ro Oblivion rather than the "whimsical" ibe I m getting so far.

I doubt they took inspiration from the first Black and White.

WoW is the most relevant example, I doubt the art style well effect the environmetns. But who knows.

Well, assuming the game is supposed to be capable to be run on a mediocre pc / lap tops. Such graphics are required for battles with high numbers. They look "decent" enough, and don't drop the mediocre PC's FPS to 0 during fights. Currently, they are visually appealing enough for a MMO. Of course, one would prefer such graphics that for example Skyrim has, if they would actually be doable.

I don't mean the quality, Morrowind had more realistic looking graphics imo.

I mean more realistic as in proportions and design. The orc in the preview has a huge chest and small head, like a cartoon, even if it had 2003 graphics like Morrowind I would prefer it to WoWesque grahics.

I agree with you man. I don't know why they want for the character models that they did.

so far i love the art style and the character models.
The environments look way better then RIFT and that's one of the most realistic MMOs out there atm.

I wasn't trying to say they looked similar or as over the top, I was just trying to say they didn't look like they they were trying hard to be realistic (like LotrO for example) WoW is just the closest example I could think of.

I agree that the environments are great in response to DrunkenShaman

LOTRO has some okay orcs but the actually character races are bad the animation of them are even worst.I love LOTRO and think the environment are right up their with the best but the characters are beyond bad.

From what i've seen of TESO it beats LOTRO all day long when it comes to character, the orcs are not bad at all in TESO.

Nope you wanted to compare them to WOW when they are nothing like WOW,just an over exaggeration on your part.

Not from where I stand, if your mode of argument is essentially just say that I'm wrong then I can't really convince you. WoW is famed fr being cartoony as TES:O is a MMORPG like WoW, so naturally I drew comparisons between two cartoony MMORPGS. And really, that screenshot doesn't quite prove your point as much as you seem to think, sure the graphics are crappy but it doesn't look that bizarre, unlike the orc I admittedly saw for about three seconds on youtube it looks believeable.

I think they look ridiculous, a mass of armoured chest with a tiny head, just my opinion of course.

LOTRO has bad animations but they are at least making the effort to portray them as real people as opposed to cartoon characters.

I think you misunderstand my use of realistic, I mean in terms of realism as oppossed to graphical quality.

Your opinion but i don't agree with you.

LOTRO is characters are not realistic, not as bad as WOW but they are far from realistic

Nope i understand completely but let me show you what realistic looks like,it's nothing like LOTRO.

I think it is too early to judge. Comparing a game a year or so before release with a game that released years ago is not a fair or reasonable comparison.

Also the final graphics will have to take into account the 200 player PVP vs the gfx capability of the players PC. It is therefore possible that the PVP experience may be of lower quality than the PVE experience. I stress this might not be the case for everyone and Zenimax might come up with a clever solution.

Early days B)

You can say that you dont like the characters models / style you saw. But compare them with wow? Is just silly. For a long time now based on everything we know compare teso with wow is just absurd and completely injustified.
By the way, I do like the art of teso A LOT.

I was comparing the values not the look. I was gravely mistaken and well rectify this grievous mistake with swift retribution, by executing the edict of edit clause #805.

Exactly, and like you i like the TESO art a lot.

No reason in the world to even mention WOW in the same breath.

Anyway, at least he now knows what a realistic MMO looks like,it sure ain't lotro.

I think TESO's environments aren't too far behind Age of Conan's actually. So long as there is a DX11 option for TESO, I'll have nothing to complain about regarding the environments and it will be more than up-to-date enough (just check out what AoC can do with DX11 in those vids).

I don't understand the characters though. They're out of proportion, and definitely closer to 'cartoony' than 'realistic'. http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/images/2012/157/669684_20120606_screen003.jpg in particular are too large on all of the male characters, and http://oi47.tinypic.com/24yu4rb.jpg... did he swallow a barrel? Or another Orc perhaps? http://images.wikia.com/elderscrolls/images/f/f2/Orc_zerker.jpg

As far as the comments saying "This game has to look average so it can run on older computers." PLEASE stop saying this. Age of Conan is one of the best looking MMOs out there, and only requires a single core CPU and a GPU with 128MB of VRAM. That's peanuts. Please don't forget that graphics can always be turned down in PC games - we don't need to be fighting those 100 vs 100 battles with maxed out graphics at 60fps. I will happily turn my graphics settings down to average during those large PVP situations - I don't really want the game to be capped at average graphics all the time...

And to clarify, I'm not saying I dislike cartoony art styles. I think http://www.gamesthirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/coper5.jpg http://www2.picturepush.com/photo/a/8385035/img/h/qqqqq5-(8).jpg http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/8385028/img/h/qqqqq5-(3).jpg http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/8385029/img/h/qqqqq5-(4).jpg http://www.keenandgraev.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/copernicus_almain.png http://blogs-images.forbes.com/erikkain/files/2012/05/project-copernicus-mmo.jpg (before they get canceled :(). The world of TES is gritty and realistic though, which cartoon art styles don't fit into.

Lol, WoW has that bad graphics or whatever, but the truth is that WoW still there after 8 years of release, with alot players around the world, still famous and stupid enough still pay-fee. Lol I just laugh because people are complaining about the character models but i think it is great enough. A good game are not classified from graphicls, but yes, the gameplay. If the gameplay is good enough, that is enough then. Let the staff work and see what they can do in 1 year. After that and based what people saw while playing can judge what is wrong. I will enjoy the game if gameplay is good and PvP and PvE are very balanced.

To each their own I guess.

After watching the same videos I don't see cartoony at all. I see a far closer resemblance to Skyrim than to WoW.

The actual facial features of the Orc is not bad at all, just pretty dang unproportioned lol. I'm hoping that means sliders and they wanted to show a "big" character or show it was possible to make such large characters.

I do take as a good sign that the face of the Orc isn't that far from tes orcs.

Hey, I might have http://images.uesp.net/thumb/0/04/ON-prerelease-06.jpg/800px-ON-prerelease-06.jpg to your woes.

There are other pictures of orcs in the game out there. This one is substantially more realistic in its proportions. Including the barrel-orc in that flythrough was a poorly-reasoned move but I still have reason to believe that their actual models are going to be much better.

I don't think they look cartoony at all. It's really a good mix between realistic and fantasy. I would rather my video games look like games, and not super crazy realistic. If you wanted realistic graphics I would go outside :P
