I have this problem, the watchman in castle volkihar wont open the fricking gate eventhough serena is besides me. The conversation between the watchman and serena wont initiate and i cant progress further into the questline.

Did you try reloading from the last save? It worked fine for me, but I have had other instances where I had to reload because things wouldn't progress correctly.
