cats, dogs, ponies

i used to not like cats, mostly due to most of them being unresponsive when you try and get them to talk and play (i know that cats play but they will often have times where they will look at you for a second and then ignore you for the rest of your attempts to draw their attention), and mostly like dogs, because they will come when you call them and have constant energy and you always seem to have their attention.

Then however a few years back we got a cat, I moved out over a year ago and i am now beginning to appreciate some of the stuff i miss about our cat that the dogs i have now just don't do. Such as rubbing their face and body on my legs, sleeping on my stomach and back, running up and pouncing at my feet when i walk near a corner (kinda like hobbes).

I think Someday i will get both in my house.

I definitely more of a cat person. Dogs are just too obnoxious. I also get tired of people using them as substitutes for children.

Cat person here. Dogs are more "work" and care than I care to deal with - don't want a pet that chews furniture or needs to be walked twice a day. I know ppl who crate their (larger) dogs because they haven't been able to/aren't willing to train the mutt from doing destructive things if left alone or something...

Cats have very different personalities that vary from cat to cat, btw, just like dogs. Some are lazier, some are more hyper, some are a lot more aloof and some are actually quite "needy". Most cats I've raised from kittens would come when called, that's training/association, like with a dog. One of my current cats follows me from room to room and definitely does get lonely for human attention...while my other cat largely spends all his time sleeping in a box.

I've got two Ragdoll cats and they're two of the most affectionate animals I've ever come across. Not just for cats but animals in general, including dogs. They're always up for a cuddle and snuggle up while we are in bed. And it's not really just on their terms either like a lot of cats, if you call on them theyll come running. my cats.

Saying that though, I probably still describe myself as more of a dog person. I'd love to have one but we both work and I dont think it's fair to leave a dog in the house alone all day.

We really need some added cat around here: our old cat (she made it to 22 years, I think!) was extremely affectionate and unusually for a cat would even come when called! Only problem is she was a bit too affectionate and wanted company basically all the time, being quite happy to sit outside the bedroom door whining all night to remind us of that fact; we'd even find her lying in the hallway with her chin on the floor waiting for us to come back if we'd been out. I think she occasionally gave us a "look" if she wasn't in the mood but that was quite rare, she'd generally be more than happy with the attention whenever it was offered.

I do like dogs too but considering they need regular walks and I'm agoraphobic it wouldn't really work out.

What I really want is a puma/mt. lion, but sadly that's not a legal pet around here. :D

I prefer to consiter my dog Loki the only son I'll ever have, specially since women now-a-days are super picky. Not only that but I just don't think I have the patents to raise kids of my own or someone elses kids, plus I really can't stand babies.

As for me I like both cats and dogs and like the affection that both pets bring, although I like the independance of cats more.

I used to regard cats as simply "animals" but my latest cat really made me consider cats truly "persons". She is completely different from the past two cats I've had who were both shy, silent and not very curious. The latest cat, Matsku, is 12 years old now and is extremely social to the point that she is completely unable to survive if left alone - in a room. When I am in room A and she is in room B she starts meowing loud until I come and "tell" her that she is not alone. When I go take a shower it's the same thing. She does not even want to sleep alone. Another personality-defining matter came when I bought a spray bottle of catnip - she is scared of the stuff. When she smells catnip she jumps in the air and runs away full of terror. Bad memories? She also keeps her pupils wide open 24/7 no matter the level of lighting.

That said I consider cats to have much more personality than dogs, who tend to be all the same depending on breed. I never liked dogs and having worked 8 months as a mailman it has developed into downright disgust.

I love my cats very much (all 6 of them). I wouldn't mind having a dog, but the ones I'm fond of are just too much hassle to train, or suffer from complications that shorten their lifespans (ie. Huskies, and Golden Retrievers).

I used to have a cat. It was the only survivor of a particular litter where the mother tried to hide them all away in attics and basemants, and was unable to care for them properly. That alone was odd enough because the mother had already had probably a dozen litters before that.

By the time we found where she hid them only one was still alive. I named it Lucky for obvious reasons.

I played with Lucky every day, bringing it food and playing games where I make scratching noises with my hand and Lucky tries to stalk and pounce on it. It was kind of like how you see two cats play "fight", with biting and jumping and running around, only Lucky never bit that hard. Lucky was the only cat I've had that came when I called its name, and then it only came when I called its name. Used to actually jump up into my arms, and if I held my hands flat Lucky would sit on them as I walked around.

Shame I had to leave Lucky behind in Uganda when I moved, wasn't even fully grown yet. I wonder what ever happened to that cat.

I prefer dogs. A lot more fun, they can also come running and swimming with me! And if I want them to go away I just flap my arms and say "bugger off" and they go. Never works with cats...

Also I'm biased because the only cats I've ever had the misfortune of living with have been infested with fleas. *scratches and glares at the flatmate's new cat*

It's legal where I live. :)

People say their cats may be more affectionate than dogs, but I guess it is fair yo say no one has seen my dog. When the other two dogs are being pet or whatever she has to do something to get all the attention. She also lays on and around people all the time, and will follow people all over the place. When she was younger she would be affectionate to strangers too.

She is also extremely smart for a dog, so that makes her pretty amazing also.

As lovely as my cat is. I'm much more of a dog person. They're a lot more fun and unlike cats they seem to ask you to play, whereas you have to ask cats to play with you. The answer to most problems most people have with dogs, is to just get a really small dog. My dog was somewhat smaller than my cat, and was able to do things like, sleep on you and didn't need walking every day either, since a run around the house or garden would wear him out completely.

My dog has always been affectionate and quiet, even though his breed are supposed to be excitable. He has learnt to hug people, he goes and rests the side of his head against them, something you don't really see in dogs.

One of my cats is like that. She's totally attached to me, follows me everywhere, and will scratch at the door forever if I lock her out of my room.

She's scared of everybody and everything else though.

A few of my cats ask to play. They have this fake raccoon tail toy and carry it around in their mouth while making noises until I play with them.

Whili don't hate cats, I am by and far a dog person. To me, dogs have way more personality, and they are really loyal. If you are sad my dog (40+lb English bullie) will run up, jump on your lap and lick you to make it all better. It seems they can feel your emotion and react accordingly. All the time growing up with cats that has never been the case.

Yeah, the typical "dog" smell...I don't like it either. If one bathes their dog every other day, it's not bad/tolerable, but still there, musky...gets on everything. But then cats can have litterbox odor issues, even if you're super-clean about it, so it's kind of a trade off.

It's legal where I live.
I think the only way I could have a puma is if I declared/proved my home to be a wildlife sanctuary.

You want an unresponsive pet? Look at ferrets. When I lived with my ex, she had 4 of them. Not a single one of them gave a damn about us. Pet them, pick them up, throw toys at them, they really don't care at all. They're cute and they play together (or harasss each other, I'm still not sure which they were doing) but when it comes to humans, they don't care.

One of my cats alone is infinitely more responsive than all 4 of those ferrets put together.

Had cats and had dogs with me having preference towards canines. Cats are great companions, but they can be drama queens at times not wanting to be touched, petted, etc... just wanting to be left alone. Even on crappy days I find dogs to be more accepting than cats even if they don't want to play.

Only pet I probably wouldn't find affection in are snakes, lizards, and spiders.
