That command is very buggy. More often than not, if you are higher than level 1, it will redistribute your stats evenly among magicka, health and stamina and remove your race bonuses.

I've used showracemenu twice on my Breton thief and a time or two on my Redguard mage. Without changing their races, I've never had a problem with stat redistribution. Name changing was fine.

Changing race can be used to change name.

'showracemenu' in console, come out of console, then hit done and it will let you rename your character.

I'm using showracemenu almost daily to tweak the aspect of my characters, change their hairstyles, etc... As long as you stay away from the race selection everything will be fine. The only downside is that it resets skin colors.

I think the only time I messed up something was when I used it in conjuction with the setrace command. I lost my original racial abilities. I was able to get them back via the addspell command.

From what I understand, it will only mess up your stats if you choose a new preset. Choosing a new race automatically chooses a preset of that race. Once a new preset is chosen, there's no avoiding the stat changes; unlike with Oblivion, a race's stats are applied immediately, not upon closing the menu. I found this out a year or two ago when I tried to compile a list of starting stats for Oblivion races from within the race menu - but they all returned the same values as Imperial for everything.
