Checkpoint Saving?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:59 am

I admit, I haven't followed the BFG Edition much if at all. But, I noticed it was going to come bundled with D00M and D00M 2 so I figured that I might want to get it just for those two alone. But, I just read an article saying that it'll have "Checkpoint saving" which I'm assuming will be for D00M 3. I don't remember but I could've sworn that D00M 3 still allowed you to save anywhere as you saw fit. So, was that removed in favor of the "Checkpoint" system? I've never liked "Checkpoint" save systems as they force you to continue until you "Reach the Checkpoint". Is this true or was this speculation? The article I read was dated June, 19th 2012 so it's an old article.

I haven't played D00M 1/2 or 3 in a very long time; in fact the rig I built in 2004 was specifically for D00M 3 and it was just replaced this year for Skyrim.

Also, does anyone know which versions of D00M 1 & 2 it'll come with?

Checkpoint saving is confirmed, but chances are that it just means the game will autosave at specific points in addition to letting you save anywhere.

No word yet that I know of on which versions of 1 & 2 are included, though it was recently mentioned on here that their multiplayer is based on the XBLA versions, so I won't be surprised if that's the versions we're getting (hopefully with Thy Flesh Consumed and No Rest for the Living included, but that hasn't been mentioned yet).

I hope we're not getting the shorter versions. I'm not too concerned about the multiplayer but I really enjoyed all three games growing up.

All versions of the original Doom games allow saving your game whenever you want. This includes the XBLA versions.
Checkpoint saving seems to be an addition if this also applies to those.
But as far as i remember, checkpoints where already saved automatically in the PC version of Doom3 so this is nothing really new.

I'd be surprised if ID would use other versions of Doom/Doom II than the XBLA versions as they are already running perfectly on the right target platform.
Porting the old Dos versions again to give us a shorter version without "They flesh consumed" and "No rest for the living" wouldn't make any sense.

No, Doom 3 didn't have checkpoint save. It only saves when you start a level. So if you die at the end of the level, then you have to start the level all over again.

So, you can't save anywhere during the level? I should really just fire it up on the computer and see.

You do realize that Thy Flesh Consumed isn't actually a XBLA-exclusive episode and WAS in the DOS version?

Yes, you can save from the menu or quicksave at any time with F5 on the original Doom 3. It also autosaves on level change.

Yep, you're right! My post didn't make sense that way.

The original Dos "Doom" had the basic three episodes and "the Ultimate Doom" also for Dos that came out later already included the additional "They flesh consumed".
The XBLA version is based on "The Ultimate Doom".
I still own both Dos versions as the original US releases.

But Doom II on XBLA has an exclusive episode never before released.

I lent my two copies of the original Doom and Doom II out as well as a copy of Wolfenstein 3d that an ex-girlfriend gave me and I never got them back. Which is Why I thought the BFG Edition may be a worthy addition to my catalog. Now, if iD would do the same with Wolfenstein.

Hello everyone.

I am fairly new here, I've never posted but I have been a member for a while.

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything more about this "checkpoint save system" that is being implemented into Doom 3. In my opinion, if it were to be only checkpoints (no manual saves allowed) it would ruin the game to me. I can only assume, however, that when they say checkpoint save system allowing for smoother progression, they simply mean more autosaves. Do you guys think that as well? Do you think that we will still be able to manually save as much as we want and wherever we want? I sure hope so. All of id Software's games (developed by them) has allowed for manual saves correct? Apart from the newer Wolfenstein which wasn't actually developed by id was it not?

Just hoping someone could shed some more light on this issue.

Thanks for reading.

i don't see id would remove manual saves from bfg edition. they even had it on their latest game, rage. furthermore, autosave system is not always good fit for games like doom 3 where player's health won't regenerate.

Correct. There's no checkpoints for DOOM 1 and 2, though.

There is still quick save, but be careful, if you start a new game to play RoE or the lost missions and quick save, it will overwrite previous quick saves. For all three doom 3 campaigns you only get one quick save, if you want play RoE or Lost missions, you have select "new game" it will not overwrite you checkpoint saves however. Why would you use one save system for all three games? arhg!
