Choosing Race

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:31 pm

So I've seen a lot of people saying something to the effect of "Don't choose a certain race because they have boosted abilities because you won't be able to level it as much." So does this mean if I want archery, I should avoid Bosmer? Why is this, and how does that make sense? I'm confused.

Those people are going towards Meta-Gaming and Efficient-Leveling. Even then, you will reach a level as high (if not equal) as they. Somewhere a in the 70-75.
All Skills help with leveling up and they fixed the Leveling so that we don't need to do Efficient-Leveling.

I made that thread. Dont listen to me. It's more for making maxing a little easier but starting with bonuses in skills you want is never a bad thing.

You could be a WoodElf with a two-handed battle axe. Go for it!
Or, a bulky yet stealthy Nord with a Mages Staff!
Be anything you want!

I personally go with the Nords, because they are the more human, other than Imperials. I'd just prefer to be a Human DragonBorn. Making it like a superpower! :batman:

Most "information" here have the same quality as those exchanged by a bunch of old women at water wells. That said the starting differences in classes will have VERY little consequences in the long run considering how strong gear gets when you reach higher levels. Choose your race depending on roleplaying and aesthetic.

I really didn't like the leveling in oblivion; it was too fast, and you simply became weaker. Efficient leveling takes the fun out of the game. I really hoped they addressed this.

Its hard to pass up the resist frost, fire, or magic some of the
races have.

Considering they said in the designer video that Frost Dragons
were some of the more powerful dragons, the 50% frost resist
of Nords seems hard to pass up. Well, that and the fact that
the game is in a winter setting thus perhaps more frost using
creatures...hmmm.

I personally think that things like that matter only if you want to do some more serious RPing.

Again, this thread is stupid. Start with whatever you want to. Who in the hell tries to max out every skill, btw try to have fun and RP your character because it's much more fun than trying to become level 70 or so.

Don't worry about it. In Oblivion the leveling was messed up with major and minor skills. Skyrim will be fine.

Let me be abundantly clear lol. I am NOT choosing the Dunmer for their bonuses at all lol. Just for their lore. Their bonuses do a poor job of reflecting what they are supposed to do. Represent the culture of the race through abilities.

See that's the other thing. This is my first TES game. I am trying to rp the characters as best as possible, but I don't know their history or lore very well. I have done some minor background checks on them, but it's a tough choice.

Well the races with the richest and most unique cultures would probably have to be the Dunmer and then the Redguards. Argonians and all the rest have great cultures as well. We just know the most about the Dunmer's culture because of Morrowind's fantastic portrayal of their culture and Oblivion's utter failure to properly enlighten us on Imperial culture.

The best choice for you is probably the Dunmer. Then again I would say that as they are my favorite race. They tend to have useful skill bonuses but in the end it all comes down to a flavor thing.

minor/major
Spoiler
Dunmer and Orcs seem like they would have the most RP potential this time around given the events of the 4E. Both races are basically without a homeland. The Dunmer had a meteor land on them which set off a massive volcano that destroyed and weakened the majority of their nation, then got invaded by the Argonians about 200ish years ago come Skyrim. Around the same time the Orcs got attacked and driven from their homeland of Orsimer by the Bretons and Redguards who did not really like them apparently. Both groups of people supposedly took refuge in Skyrim. Skyrim seems like it is gathering the remnants of events of importance like a magnet.

Really it is best for you to just look up the lore on the races over at the UESP wiki. The link was provided in the previous posters post. Great site. Do not be afraid to wonder around the site. TES lore is DEEP.

Don't worry about RP on your first playthrough, just pick a race that looks cool. and for your inevitable second playthrough you would have had extensive interactions with the other races and you can pick which one you like best.

Or you could just play oblivion as a tutorial for skyrim RIGHT NOW because it will svck compared to skyrim if you dont get it before.

That it is sir, that it is. I hope they do a good sort of refresher course in the game for us newbies. It's really hard to get it all in. I'm sure the storytelling is top notch though.

Haha yeah, right. I'm about to start a new game 6 days before Skyrim comes out.

Essentially at this point I am down to Nord, Breton and Bosmer. I guess representing the Warrior, Mage, and Thief sides pretty well! It's very difficult to choose...

Sorry for the repost guys. Figured it was better than posting a new topic.
Lore-wise, would a Nord in elven armor be strange?
