So even after having completed the entire civil war questline, and after having been asked to mop up the remaining enemy camps I find out that after god knows how many updates and patches the leader in the enemy camps is still an essential NPC and therefore immortal. What a pain in the butt.

Yeah, I would have liked it if after you finish the civil war questline those officer NPCs were made nonessential.
