Hey!

I've started a new game by skipping Helgen, and I'm wondering... How do you start the main quest if you've never met either Hadvar of Ralof? I tried speaking with Jarl Balgruf, but he's not greeting me with the usual line, instead he's telling me to talk to his steward.

Well it sounds to me like you've spannered it, so you better get back and start it properly...?

What happens if you travel to Helgen now? That might initiate the MQ for you, but I don't know.

Have you tried running through Bleakfalls Barrow? Finding the "Dragonstone" is part of the MQ and should kick it off. It's how I started the MQ, the only thing you really need to run through Helgen for is to get yer hands free if you've got that, then yer done with that quest.

Easy. Open the console during the opening wagon ride and coc to wherever you want.

There you have it, use the console to start your desired quest. I suggest starting Bleak Falls Barrow, I'll try to post the codes when I get home. In the meantime, you can get quest info from UESP (make sure to make a permanent save before messing around with console).

To all who are asking:

In the main menu, right after the Bethesda logo, before you load, or start a new game, you can bring up the console, and enter "coc [place]" like "coc riverwood" and you'll spawn on the marker with the default Nord, and his equipment seen in the Skyrim trailers.


I have tried that and I went to Dragonsreach with the tablet, no luck. I'll have to find the console code to start the quests it seems...

For reference, if you go to UESP and check on the console command entry, there is actually an example bat file for an alternate start that I believe also contains instructions on how to start the main quest...
