I am really frustrated with my inability to finish the College of Winterhold storyline. After the explosion at the end of "Revealing the Unseen" the Archmage is dead in the courtyard and "Containment" won't start. The other mages comment upon the body, but then move on. Mirabelle Ervine does not acknowledge that the Archmage is dead, and actually I can drag his body over to her and it passes right through her, which is darn funny when she is saying "Please don't bother the archmage..."

On the theory that the glitch was the result of a conflict with another quest, I have finished most of my open quests. I finished the main storyline, finished the civil war (Imperials), killed the Dark Brotherhood. I only have "Taking Care of Business," "Lights Out!" and "No Stone Unturned" active, all of which I am ignoring because this character isn't a thief. I finished all open side quests for the College (Shalidor's Insight, Find that Book). I stood around in front of Aren's body for most of a day (game time) watching people react to it. Now Ancano is also wandering around the College like nothing has happened.

Is this ever going to resolve? Or am I going to have to start a new mage to ever see the end of this story?

Starting a new mage won't help. Once you get the glitch, it will affect other characters too. I had an original mage that got this glitch and now, no character can complete the college quest. The College Quests are side missions in this game so don't expect a fix any time soon. Just pretend your the Archmage and go on with other game content.
