Combat? Dated ? Clumsy?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 1:28 pm

I am loving the hell out of this game, but whilst the combat is serviceable, its a bit Jar Jar binks isnt it...?

Im coming fresh from Dead Island which hands down is the best 1st person melee system ive seen, the zombies reacted realistically to every blow, every slice, and the result was very satisfying and addictive combat.

Whereas Skyrim, just seems clumsy in comparison. Now I know I know, compared to how much they get right, I'm not gonna winge too much, but its definately an area they could try to patch or update to improve no?

(Bethesda should check this article on combat - http://www.hookedgamers.com/blogs/chrispriestman/2011/10/31/skyrims_combat_may_not_be_good_enough_for_todays_standard.html)

it definitely has that "meh" elder scrolls combat feeling to it. Ah well, maybe the next game

My expectations were low, therefore I am highly impressed. I thought it would feel wonky and floaty, but it doesn't. I still prefer magic, but using a sword is a blast. It actually feels like I'm slashing flesh and separating tissue.

Better than its predecessor's combat, so I can't complain.

Melee combat is a bit meh, but it's still better than Oblivion, which is good enough for me. Finishing moves can be a bit glitchy sometimes but they're alright.

Magic and archery are awesome.

IMO melee combat still feels very similar to Oblivion, it feels alittle different perhaps but they really barely give any reaction to attacks. However, if enemies were always to react to hits, stagger backwards and such, you could always keep on hitting them until their dead, and they wouldn't be able to attack back. Well, perhaps not true...they could try to counter your attacks. I have no idea why it still feels like hitting a tree during combat, why Bethesda hasn't changed this much. I can understand very well after a game like Dead Island where the combat is indeed VERY good and responsive, that it feels a bit off now.

As long as the I-chop-at-something-and-it-damn-well-better-die function works, I'll be a happy little Vegemite :)

It's probably the best combat in the entire TES series, but there still is room for improvement since that still isn't saying a whole lot.

However, the problem with having enemies react to every single blow like in the OP's Dead Island example is that it would be both incredibly overpowered and it would make abilities like Fus Ro Dah or certain weapon perks basically useless.

Please no! I love the combat as it is, every aspect of it, especially the magic! So don't change it to the jRPG-fighstyles please! Bethesda and ES for ever!!

Love Skyrim more than I love myself right now!

The combat is fine, this isn't assassin's creed.

I think it's fun.

Games that have really complicated combat systems tend to have only that. With a TES game, you'd have to learn all that on top of learning how so much other stuff works, it would get horrible and lots of people would never know what they were doing half the time. Not that they didn't oversimplify other stuff in a bad way, but, the combat is not a problem.

Much like "Dead Island" and "Oblivion" before it the combat takes a bit of getting used to.

It's not simply a case of swinging wild and hoping to hear a clunk.

Different weapons act differently and depending on where you've placed your perks there are any number of modifiers that will affect your attacks.

The combat won't become dated or clumsy until you've mastered it.

I like the combat but it's a bit slow (you could call it a bit clumsy), that's my only complaint.

Oblivion combat was better, more fluid.

Archery is awesome though... but swordplay is clunky as hell.

I like it much better than most game's melee combat. Comparing it to Dead Island is unfair though, cause Dead Island's melee combat is the best I've seen in any game.

coming from past elder scrolls.
this was how i saw it.

the combat itself is pretty decent (for somethingg meh that wasnt pimped out)

my biggest complaint is when targets run around like chickens next to people you dont want to hit and even if your aiming at the bad guy, the good guy gets hit.

I swear the negative comments outweigh the positive 10 to 1. The combat in this game feels great to me.
