Combat looks outdated....

Post » Fri Jan 25, 2013 8:08 am

So new here, thought I would pop in and say Hello and try to get some info while im in here. Longtime MMO fan and gaining interest in this title the more I read. Unfortunatly I have been watching some of the videos and have become increasingly concerned about the style of combat offered in this title. It seems to be outdated and clunky from the footage i have seen. Now, I am ABSOLUTLY aware that the footage is probably from an early alpha/Beta build but it is the combat "style" that is worrysome to me. Its simply looks like "Whack-a-Mole" style combat that became outdated far too long ago.

Currently I am playing GW2. A game that was also in development for the last 5 years like ive read about TESO. GW2 brought to the table a very fun style of combat. Unfortunalty, the rest of the game fell really short imho. Now, ive never played an Elder Scrolls game on PC before, console only. During one of the videos about TESO it was mentioned what the mouse controls do. Something like the mosue itself moves your camera view, mouse1 is offense, mouse 2 defense. Something like that, i didnt quite get the idea. So this also worries me because i am a "clicker" I can only play by "clicking" my utility skills on the UI. Does this mean when I move my mouse down to my UI and click away that my camera view will move with me as I move down, etc etc etc?

Do you feel the combat style is outdated and clunky?

Can I play this game as a mouse clicker?

This topic was intended strictly for information gathering and not "bashing" or hating on the game. Im sure this game will be well recieved.

I think the hot bar can only be used from the numbers on the keyboard... The fact that the camera and combat controls like a TES game would mean clicking on the hot bar wouldnt work
For an MMO the combat is more innovative than out of date.

I feel that the combat is extremely up-to-date and is actually a huge improvement on the "generic MMO combat" which most MMO's have used, including to some extent GW2. While we've only seen one brief video of pre-alpha footage there's been lots of great articles written about the combat system and it sounds extremely exciting and much like classical TES combat.

There's also of course the added fact that ESO is going to have the trinity and class roles, to some extent, so I'm thrilled that this is making a return and can't wait to see how it turns out.

Also you won't be "clicking" anything. Anything on your hotbar or anything like that will be activated through keys on your keyboard and not your mouse, it's not a hotbar ability spam based game such as WoW and to some extents GW2.

Also, welcome to the forums!

The combat is no way out dated. It is the same combat as an Elder Scrolls Game. Except you have a 6 slot hotbar which allows you to use spells/skills quickly. Like Skyrims favorite menu, except it is always on screen. And yes you can assume since the mouse controls the camera and the combat that you'd have to use the keyboard buttons unless you have extra mouse buttons.

This and Tera are the only games I know of that use any kind of mouse clicking combat system! So its definitely not out dated and it is much more accurate then Tera's combat system.

it plays like traditional TES. Works exactly like the xbox but with a mouse and keyboard. If this truly concerns you, I figure it would be possible to use a controller for this kind of game. Even if support isn't provide for by the game itself, it's pretty easy to set up a controller to use keyboard/ mouse functions.

I really think the key to combat, espcially in PvP is the group that plays together all the time so they know exactly how to use the skill synergies that their group has, and to anticipate when someone will have their Ultimate available, I can bet there will be some kind of warning to your group when any player in it is about to pop their Ult...Its going to be a new kind of strategy and I am really looking forward to it.

TOR's combat was outdated. What I've seen of TESO's combat so far is a breath of fresh air by comparison.

The gameplay controls are similar to Skyrim on PC. Left mouse attacks, hold left mouse to power up an attack. Right mouse blocks. You have a small hotbar of abilities which you use number keys to fire them off. WASD moves directionally, camera is controlled by the mouse. You have a reticule and what you aim at with your reticule is what you hit.

The combat system as it is now is pretty much what TES fans demanded as they wanted the game to feel like an Elder Scrolls game and not some other MMO out on the market. So that's what you are going to get out of it when you play.

If you are hoping for WoW or GW2 style combat, you won't find it here.

Ugh, Ive nevered played a game and used the numeric buttons to toggle abilities. I simply do not have the dexterity to do it. My left hand is on the WASD assignments and my right hand controls my mouse. Thats it...it takes me far too long to go from WASD to a numeric, back to WASD. Any time I do that I have to look down and find the numeric button then get my WASD fingers re-situated. Doing that every time I cast a utility will be infuriating. Cant see myself playing any other way, so maybe I wont be playing this game. Lets hope I get into BETA and maybe I can fool with it a bit.

That's what game mouses exist for then. I'm like yourself and I svck at moving while using the numeric keys so that's why gaming mouses with even so few as 6 buttons on them is like a godsend.

If the style of combat control is similar to Skyrim's, I'll be very pleased.

I just hope the ability/spell portion of it is more dynamic than the typical WoW "best rotation" garbage, where every player of every class is expected to perform hotkey presses in a specific sequence on cue. There's nothing dynamic (or fun) about "1,2,3,4,5....3,4,5,1,2....repeat". In fact, after doing it for so long, it's actually quite boring ;)

Think of it like an FPS. You move your view with the mouse, and "Fire" using your left trigger and "block" using your right trigger.

The combat is supposed to be real-time, so it's purported to be just like an ES game... which is to say imagine an FPS with a sword instead of a gun. :P

If I heard correctly from a dev vid we wont see a hotbar for skills. We may get utility skills/perks that can be given a numbered key but the mouse and its buttons are for combat much like in TES single player games. Most of the combat skills though will come from using finesse points that you build by blocking, dodging, parrying etc .

This is all mearly speculation at the moment as no one knows how its going to work or opperate for certain until the game is released or those lucky few that manage to get into beta, but then they wont be able to post about it as they will be under the NDA.

I would assume you can change key bindings for the 6 abilities

difficult to be out dated- when it is probably the second action based title on european and american continent. It is definately a nice refreshement after all those lock and smash games where every your movement was limited by cooldown or other unfancy limitation. now I will be able to stab my enemies with a sword and pleasure them with lightning ( hopefuly )
