Companions make game too easy?

Post » Fri Jan 28, 2011 8:31 pm

You guys play with companions, or not? Without companions I find myself playing REALLY carefully, planning where to go and where not. Even with level 10 I'm not fond of meeting a pack of ghouls, etc. Game feels very good and challenging, well balanced.

Then I found out about Boone, took him with me, and guess what, that guy is one man terminator army. I mean, he just flattens everything I can find. Only DeathClaws managed to take him down.

I'm having mixed feelings about this. I love the fact that I have companion with me, but at least Boone seems over powered, I mean, WAY overpowered.

Playing Normal + hardcoe.

Yes, obvious option. But what I'm after, should the game use some kind of balancing system, e.g. amount of enemies when you have certain companion. Game feels so good when alone, then you ofcourse want to use companions, and it gets a bit too easy. Of course I could tighten the screw and play harder, but then when I'm alone, I think I would get my ass kicked.

In most cases, I still feel like I am playing by myself because my companions die in the first 10 seconds of battle......So I am sitting there like, get up punks and stop sleeping on the job! what does a waste-lander gotta do around here to get decent help?

im thinking that they put boone in the game for people who are specced more into medicine speech, all those non combat skills so they wouldnt get wtfpwned every time they ran into a mob you know.

Yeah Boone is insane, indoors in tight corridors he is hampered somewhat, but in general most everything in the wasteland swiftly becomes his [censored] upon meeting it.

If you don't play hardcoe in addition, so that he is immortal, the game is a joke as far as combat goes. Lots of times I just watch while Boone kills everything.

And if you have another companion like Rex with you as well as Boone... Well then you might as well just walk around looting, no point in wasting ammo.

He's really not as powerful as some people make him out to be. I take him with me and I still kill way more enemies than he does. He's not some instant head shot machine. I've seen him fire about 15 rounds at an enemy without hitting them once. In close quarters he's pretty much useless. If you don't like him, you don't have to take him though. Simple as that.

This is no different than FO3. Companions = Easier

Companions in FONV have their own side stories which is somewhat interesting.

FWIW. I find Boone to be as you say but ED-E seems pretty weak offensively in comparison. Maybe only use ED-E instead of Boone and see how that feels for you.

I find that they make the game harder for me. They always seem to do something that screws up my plan... Ed-E will draw the attention of the Giant Radscorpion to my right, just as I engage the one on my left... or Boone will go off chasing a Legion guy with a Machete.. or despite leaving Veronica a place outside the city limits, the guys inside end up tracking her down and killing her.

The only really useful thing they do for me is to act as a packmule,

Just switch Boone to a different weapon. Give him a Service Rifle or Assaut Carbine or something. It's not Boone that's overpowered, it's the Hunting Rifle. Just give him a weapon that doesn't bypass armor as much and problem solved.

He is pretty damn overpowered. I love his perk, though. Mostly I've been trying to compete with him to see if I can get more kills--we're about tied right now. Makes me play harder trying to keep up.

Companions don't make the game easy, Boone does.
Try picking Raul and ED-E.
Oh how I just love to buy every stimpack in the map and waste 'em on ED-E....
And Raul needs to be protected at all costs against larger stuff.

That's actually a good/cool way to try and compensate for his overpoweredness :)

I ditched Boone for Veronica, now it's a little better, since she's a Melee fighter instead of an expert sniper... although I'll probably regret that decision next time I wander into Scorpion Valley....

So. You want to use a companion, but Boone is too overpowered. The solution is clear: someone should make a mod that introduces companions other than Boone and ED-E! I mean, it was just silly of the developers to not include any other companions in the whole game. I, for one, would like to see a ghoul as a companion. Or maybe a back-talking Brotherhood of Steel scribe. Or, even better, a Nightkin who thinks she's your grandma! Why does nobody think of these things but me?

Lily is a powerhouse, but very welcome companion when attacked by multiple foes. Without her sometimes, I'd be a goner with some of the heavy attacks, even on Very Easy to Normal.

I like when Lily repeats every 15 seconds while sneaking "Oh, Don't you worry about me deary! Your Grandma knows how to stay quiet!!" Yeah right she does... Obsidian must have had quite a laugh with that one, as there's no way to shut her up.

I'm currently using ED-E and Boone as companions. The best description I've seen of ED-E (in this forum) is that he makes a great flying backpack. In combat, meh. I gave Boone a Rebar Club. He's a frickin' one man army now. He uses the Rebar Club in close quarters and gets many critical kills. Outdoors, he's a headshot king with his rifle. He gets overwhelmed easily by multiple foes, though. I've seen him taken down by a pack of radscorpions and a few Nightstalkers.

I could see where you might think Boone makes the game a bit too easy.

I like to think their total lack of self preservation makes up for their accuracy and power.

Boone seems ideal to Me because I prefer to put points into skills such as Science and Lockpicking(MUCH better experience) and I'm keeping Small Guns at about 60/70.

I HATE finding locations that require high lockpick and repair to gain entry to some parts....This is annoying in quests too so leveling every non combat skll.

I like Boone not for his ability to kill, which really is limited in the end game sometimes, but for the Spotter perk.

I think you'll find Boone is substantially less effective in close quarters. In the desert, though, he is king. He usually gets more kills than me, which is pretty good.
