Companions quest broken.

In one of the first quest where you have to brawl with the owner of the alchemy shop in whiterun... I think its arcadia's pauldron. Well i killed her before that quest and then I came to it and the quest marker pointed to her dead body. I might be able to talk to whoever gave me the quest to end it another way and maybe be punished ill try later. Has anyone else gotten this glitch?

How is it a glitch if you killed the NPC in question?

Well it might not be but if the quest doesnt end it might be I have to check. The game still recognized it as an active quest.

It is going to be an active quest until you talk to the NPC, which you cannot as you killed her. The result is an active quest that cannot be completed. I believe this is expected functionality.

Nope its broken I just checked... Farkas gave me the quest and when I ask him for work he just says... "Ive already gave you work, now get to it". I also asked skjor for work and he said "Didn't farkas give you a job? finish that and ill have something for you." No one else will give me work there. So its broken.

It is only broken because you cannot complete your current quest... because you killed the NPC the quest is tied to. Since you cannot complete the quest, you cannot obtain any others. All of the companion quests I have come across have to be completed one at a time, meaning if I had a quest from Farkas, no one else would give me a quest; as you described above.

So wouldnt that be cosidered a glitch? Because I should still be able to do the questline if I killed the character tied to it. Also shouldnt she be essential?

How would you be able to talk to a dead NPC to finish a quest? It cannot be done.

As far as whether or not she should be tagged as essential, Personally... there are already too many essential NPCs as it is. Although, that solution would prevent problems such as these.

Ok, so i wont kill her again. They could take the morrowind approach. Dont most of them just respawn if there essential to a quest. I know some never come back and the quest is gone forever.

oh and for being able to do it I meant to talk to farkas and have him give you something else to do or pay some fine maybe?

I honestly cannot recall if NPCs respawned in Morrowind, I have not played it in probably 6 years. I am pretty sure they didn't, I remember being unable to complete the Faendal (Was that his name? Mr Wood Elf in the beginning) quest with the healing ring because I killed him.

It would make sense to have some form of quest opt out if you are unable to complete the quest for any reason. They have this functionality already with the Theives Guild, you are able to drop the bedlam, sweep, etc quests without a problem.

Certainly could have been. I have not noticed, but I am not sure if the Mage's guild shares the same feature as the Theive's Guild. I know you can opt out of the book search quests but am unsure of the others.

VERY important characters in Morrowind could not be killed i.e. they went unconscious then got back up. Problem is in Skyrim EVERYONE can be killed. Stupid dragons kill more townspeople than anything in my games. Lost sooo many trainers because of them.

Sadly it is not a glitch. It seems to be how they did the game (relating to the Companions). I tried very hard not to attack anyone and saved all the time. Though a remove quest option would have been nice.

Sadly this is not true. There are quite a few essential NPCs, that maybe should not be. The Imperial Captains in the outposts come to mind. Sure was hoping to be able to kill them, but they remain essential even after the civil war questline has finished.

Sinc we were told we could play the world any way we wanted it's a glitch.... not being able to advance in a questline because the game does not recognise our actions (the NPC was already dead and unable to be intimidated) is not the outcome of a bad choice it is a glitch.... choosing to kill or let live a character when asked to make the choice by the game is not a glitch.

The game did recognise his actions, he killed the NPC so you cannot complete the quest. This could happen in any TES game. Killing NPCs is not a glitch, otherwise they would be essential.

You have the wrong person. You are supposed to brawl the female smith right inside the main gate.
