Companions Quest glitch. Can't continue "Trouble in Skyr

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 10:45 pm

I am working on the companions quests. I am currently working on "Trouble in Skyrim" but am unable to complete it because Farkas doesn't acknowledge that I finished the assigned task. I became part of the companions and was told to talk to one of the circle members to get some work. I either talked to Farkas or Skjor. I was told to go to a camp to dispose of the bandits that are causing trouble in Skyrim. I went to the camp and disposed of all the bandits and the bandit chief. It said the area was cleared and to return to Farkas. Well, I return to Jorrvaskr and there is an arrow over Farkas's head but when I open the dialogue there isn't anything he says that indicates I cleared the area and the task was completed. I talked to Farkas, Aela and Vilkas, to ask for work, and they all say that I am doing something for Skjor and to complete that before asking for more work. Skjor says I am a whelp that needs to prove myself so talking to him doesn't help. What do I do now since I cleared the camp but am unable to turn it into Farkas, or any circle member for that matter. Because of this I can't further any of the companion quest line. I am a khajiit so I don't know if that makes a difference. Any patches coming out soon for Xbox 360? Any solutions to this quest line problem?

That sounds pretty borked to me... :(

Have you an earlier save which you can return to?

Did you by any chance clear out that cave before... you got this quest...? Some banditleaders are "sort of Unique".. after a dungeon respawns its population... they are replaced with generic bandits.. This will cause issues in several misc quests... (the Skooma..operation notoriously so, I also had this issue with the Rift watchtower which was assigned as a bounty, Steward of Riften is not acknowledging )
The only way, for now, seems to be to revert back to a save ... before you accepted this quest... and talk to either Aelea or Vilkas.. for work.. If you saves don't go back so far.. I am afraid you're out of luck..

Some aspects of this bug should have cleaned out with 1.3 (Radiant Story incorrectly assigning roles), but it looks like 1.4 or even further patches are needed.
Sadly the only wat to avoid bugs like this...
-Don't clear caves if you want to do misc jobs for the companions, and avoid bounty jobs..
-Never pick up uniquely named items in Boss chests (X's sword, X's musical instrument, Book Y...etc)

The unique items bug, and the fact NPC's will not recognize you picking them up is getting addressed in 1.4, so hopefully they will do the same for the bug you encountered.

Thanks for the replies. @ throgal I didn't clear out the cave before I did this quest. I did do a bounty though, before the companion quest, and cleared out Redoran Retreat. Maybe that is what glitched the game. I will probably go back to an earlier save and make sure not to enter any caves, mines, complete bounties or do anything that could screw up a later quest. I also cleared out Valtheim Towers before the companion quests b/c it was on the way to Orpan Rock; perhaps that caused a glitch. Hopefully 1.4 will fix some of the bug issues that are still a problem in the game.

Just as a follow-up, or expansion on the topic: Quest -- Trouble in Skyrim (the second assignment I got of that title) Kill the leader of Forsaken Cave. Well, I didn't get the assignment until quite some time, and several level ups, after I had already been there and killed the leader. Now, when I go to the cave, I can find the leader's body with the quest item marker over his head. And, Farkas keeps telling me I have a job, go do it. Therefore, unless I want to backtrack hundreds of hours to an old save, I guess I'm stuck not being able to do any more of the Companion Quest. It would be nice if this could be fixed.
