I wanted to put some of the exploration back into the game, instead of having the compass markers tell me where everything is at, however, i didn't want to remove them entirely. Just make them appear when i'm MUCH closer to the location. Basically, along the same vain as this mod from Oblivion: ( http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1878 )
After much trial and error it seems that the game settings of iMapMarkerVisibleDistance and iMapMarkerRevealDistance don't do anything. At least if they do anything, i can't seem to notice. Instead Skyrim seems to use two new game settings:
fHUDCompassLocationMaxDist ( Default value 20,000 )
iMapMarkerFadeStartDistance (default value 10,000 )
For my own game, ive reduced these by 60% using skyedit. So now they're using 8,000 and 4,000 respectively. It could probly be reduced further, though i do find the point of interests markers showing up on my compass at a much more sane distance. If im standing in one spot, the marker will show up approximately 1/2 to 3/4 distance of what i can see visually in the local area. Bascially, If i can't visually see the POI, it doesnt show up on the compass.
