Concerned about lack of villains with real personality

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:18 am

Seemingly the endboss will be "Big ass dragon" with the mission "Punch him untill dead to save world".

Would you like to be able to speak to him before the battle like with Dagoth Ur in Morrowind?

Will there be some dragon/endcult leaders? Will there be long and deep sidequests with villains worthy of remembering like the red dragon in Baldurs Gate?

Will there be some kind of recurring villains or betrayals for interesting plot twists? Final fantasy 7 were really good at this, and proved that good antagonists are just as important as good protagonists.

I hate it when villains in a game have underwhelming, shallow and impersonal dialogue/character.

Do you share this fear for Skyrim?

A game can have satisfying shades of gray outside the main quest.

Of course, I love to empathize with my enemy before killing him. . . and that would be a difficult thing to achieve w/ a dragon, but let's see if they pull it off. Possibly, the dragons will have compatriots (Some have speculated the Falmer will be allies to the dragons) and we can empathize with them?

Beth isn't exactly known for their interesting, three-dimensional NPCs. But, you never know... :crosses fingers:

Maybe I should play the game, and then answer you question. Oh, hey, you should do the same.

I thought Mankar Camoran an interesting person. His views were... facinating.
I really liked him speaking to me on my way up to Carac Agailator.

I felt bad killing him.

I shouldve used the term antagonists and not villain. I intend to play a evil myself so moral and ethics arent important, but characters that oppose you.

A good example is planescape torment where you could (Spoiler for that game i guess) defeat the last boss with dialogue alone. <3

Yes. The Daedraic prince of destruction will love to have a cup of tea with you while you explain why destroying everything isn't a cool idea. The princes have a tendency to put themselves above the petty mortals, so going down to their level would be a rare occurance. As for the non almighty beings of doom, the other enemies are typically psychopaths or so wrapped up in their beliefs they wouldn't bother to compromise their ideals. I'd imagine trying to argue with a member of the Thalmore why humans shouldn't be eradicated.

I'm gonna say it, Bethesda's forte is not writing stories. They excel at making vast, open worlds with loads of immersion and the best lore of any franchises.

Generally, their stories aren't the best, but they can hold their own and can get the job done. So, I wouldn't count on deep villains with lots of personality, but it wouldn't surprise me, if they hired on some more writers since FO3.

It is just as bland to kill a wolf as it would be Alduin if they have no character or dialogue to differentiate them imo. The pleasure of killing is scaled up by how deep that character is in my opinion, noone feels the same? O.o Also killing shouldnt always be the only option!

I'd love for Alduin to attempt to convince our characters exactly why we should allow him to eat the world.

Read the lore, Alduin isn't some big Dragon your going to kill, he's got quite the personality. In fact, he's got about three or four.

To the person who said Beths forte isn't writing stories, I say again, just take a peep at the lore. Their writting is beyond superb.

I agree w/ this.

The Elder Scrolls doesn't have that emotional depth. But that's not really what I'll be looking for when I play Skyrim anyhow, so if I see some in there, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

90% of the threads on this forum contain little but speculation, and you could use that argument in pretty much any of them. But if we're not to discuss things like this, then what should we discuss?
Seeing as none of us have played the game and it's forbidden to post spoilers or discuss leaked material on this forum (edit: I posted this before it was moved to the Spoiler forum), what's left besides speculation?
Well, "What's your favorite build/race?" threads, I guess, but most of us grew tired of those a long time ago.

More like "Foolish mortal, do you have any idea what would happen if I DIDN'T eat the world?"

That's like saying that a movie is well-written just because the directing and scenography is good. Lore can add depth to a story, but it's not the same thing as story.
Or, a more fitting anology: to argue that émile Zola wrote gripping literature.

Their are plenty of stories within the game niverse, not just background info. How many of you have read the Seven Fights?

By the Nine, if Bethesda's storytelling was ever as atrocious as a Final Fantasy game, or any other horrendous JRPG, I'd boycott the series immediately.

Thankfully that will never be the case and we wont get stuck with horrible linear narratives with overused, emotionally unstable, cliché angsty-teen characters.

That put me at ease to a large degree. Hope Beth will make the best out of it!

Im puzzled if Im in a small crowd here though. Seemingly people are content with average when it comes to this matter. Just curious how much this means to people as for me personally it is very important.
