Confirmed, New character will overwrite previious save

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:22 pm

This may be my first post but I've been reading this forums for well over a week now and all I can say is there are som seriously dimwitted sons of **** for people here. Are so many of you really that ignorant to think that so many people lost their characters due to user error? Overwriting your own save? Sure it happens anyone can do it but if people are telling their stories about, "no I didn't just rely on autosave" "I saved manually" "I saved on an empty slot" etc...

This happened to me. I had played for 45 hours, done the main quest and got some nice stuff but still had lots to discover. I made a new character so I could try out another skill build, when I first go to save I can't see my other file so I save on AN EMPTY SLOT, there was no save fil to overwrite to begin with. I try to load the game and still I don't see my previous file. I quit the game and try to load from the mainscreen and the only thing that is there is my new level 1 character that I made 5 minutes ago. I restart my PS3 and check my PS3 saves, all my other saves from OTHER games are there and the only save for Skyrim is my new level 1 character, my 45 hours of playing with my first character is GONE. Get that [censored] in your head. Now come and tell me I [censored] up and overwrote my own file and I'll seriously bash some [censored] heads in, I'm tired of [censored] blaming the players when this issue is CLEARLY the developers fault.

I'm with this guy. This is my first post here because i'm trying to find answers as to why i got this issue.

Here's what happened to me:
I spent about 30ish hours into Skyrim, and i was level 25. My girlfriend got interested after watching me play, so i had her make a new character. I'm very paranoid about keeping game saves, so i made sure she hit "New Save File." She made it and when she was finished, i double checked to make sure my guy was still there (cause i'm paranoid remember) and he was there, safe lvl 25 dude.
So today i come home from work, and i think about making a new different guy. So i start up a new game, i get past the execution part and save it after i get my first weapon. As i'm looking through the save files, i noticed i didn't see my dude in his elven armor on the little picture of the save box... well now he's gone. without a trace... not auto saves to back me up either.

So, after reading forums i see people saying "Why didn't you create multiple saves!?" Well, Usually i do. I played oblivion on the xbox, and fallout 3 & Vegas on the PS3. I used to make multiple saves, but for some reason i got this notion that the Auto saves would serve as my multiple saves and i would be ok. Fail on my part.
Also, I notice people say "Don't save over the 'PRISONER 1' file!" ... Well i didn't, I was sure to select "New Save File." That's what i did, and that's what i always do.

I want to think that this problem is somehow related to the large save files people are experiencing. My save file was over 6 MB, and i was reading that, that is about the file size when people experience "unplayable lag." I did notice some loss in frame rates, but it was never unplayable.

i just want Bethesda to know that this is an issue. We may be a small percent, but it's a terrible bug. I'm not here to point fingers, or call people names. I'm not here for a refund or have some kind of unreasonable demands. I just want them to acknowledge that this is an issue and fix it. I don't want it to happen again, and i don't want other people to suffer.

Dark souls is mad glitchy, and lags terribly if you play for long periods of time. Not to mention piss poor controls, and unresponsive at times.
I said that when oblivion destroyed what morrowind had built, and when fallout 3 killed off the gem fallout.

It's an auto save and that was obvious. Auto-saves are never safe areas.
Was the save made by you or the game? If it was the game that made the save it is an auotsave. Just because it was not hidden from idiots does not mean it was not an autosave.
Seriously this is pathetic you are the types of people that have caused every product to have 30 warning labels plastered all over it.

I refer you back to my other post regarding semantics.

Your definition of auto-save: Any and all saves created by the game, not the user.
The actual definition of an auto-save: Saves created by the game that can't be manually saved over. Can turn off in the options menu.

That first "wagon save" can't be turned off in the menu and can be saved over. This is faulty design and whether you believe it is a bug or not is irrelevant. It is a nasty pitfall for people.

It would appear that many people are running into this issue, so you are in the minority with your holier than thou opinions. There is no possible way to know that this save, created when you get off the wagon, will eventually be saved over in the future. You are wrong. End of story.

It isn't an autosave as those are labeled as such. It's a hard save which forcibly happens automatically and that slot gets overwritten each and every time that a new game is started.

So your saying it is an auto save. thanks.

Auto-save: a save that happens automatically... yea it is an autosave.

so an automatic save is different then an Autosave I would have never guessed. This thread is confusing.

Glad I have 132 saves on my system and more on my USB from archiving older ones.

The game allows you to save when ever you want including middle of a fight.

a CART save is the same as Wagon Save, it sound like this is the save that happens after the first cut scene at the start of the game.

Can you not set the auto save settings prior to NEW game begins.

Is there a way to tell which slot a save is using (on a PS3 that is)

If not mistaken there are only 3 says with the word AUTO attached to them. They are always the same name as when I try to copy them to my USB there is already a file there on the USB that is.

People can leave all of their arguments over semantics at the door as to which saves are autosaves and what that truly means:

Bethesda defines autosaves in Skyrim by slapping on a big fat all-caps AUTOSAVE label in the save's description. The first slot off-the-cart default Prisoner save doesn't have that AUTOSAVE label.

This problem also happened to me. I let my friend make a character and play the first few levels, but when I went to play my character again, I couldn't find the right save. And there was a mysterious save file from my friend's game where he was getting off the cart. I think that save overwrote mine. Luckily I had a second save near the end of the last dungeon I was in, so there was minimal damage.
