Confused about CFF 4gb patch

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 1:13 am

Ok, question here about this CFF 4gb patch people have been talking about. So the reccomended requirements for skyrim are a quad core cpu, and 4gbs of ram....
So why does this make any difference? Apparently it has been solving a lot of the CTD's and missing textures, so I'm not arguing that its working, i just want to know if anyone knows why since its already supposed to handle 4gbs...
Anyways, food for thought.
:foodndrink:

Ps for those who havent read what this patch does, it supposed to allow skyrim to allocate more than 2gbs of ram

i've never head it reffered to as cff..

look up LAA... it's a fix as most all 32bit programs are setup to only use 2gb... it's a compatibility flag.... mostly to make sure that those on 32bit windows...

The primary executable that runs Skyrim is not flagged to use more than 2GB of memory. I'm not entirely sure why it would be causing crashes, but most likely its because the game is trying to memcache more than is available to it.

I'm pretty sure that that 4GB requirement is simply to allow skyrim to use its full 2GB if it can, instead of having to share that memory space with the OS and whatever else you are running at the time. Truthfully, I'm not sure why they didn't just install a x64/x86 detection in the installer, and let it simply just unpack the necessary executable.

The game can only use 2GB not 4 because it's a 32bit app and not LAA, I assume 4 is recommended to make sure other programs have enough ram to not interfere with skyrims available ram.
