I'm confused on what the new PC version really adds

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:09 am

For sake of discussion, let's simply say I'm not very interested in the Doom 1 or 2 versions. Basically I already own the 2004 version of Doom 3 (awesome), but I'm confused on what *exactly* the new BFG PC version adds. I've read through some posts, but it sounds like mainly there are some minor "lighting" tweaks? Really?

Could someone provide a list of exactly what the new Doom 3 PC features are compared to the old one, please? Thanks!

Added:
- Code from id tech 5 - sound system, UI system, network system, threading model.
- "r_overbright" for enhancing lightning brightness
- Motion blur, 3D, multi monitor support.
- Significant perfomance boost, even with 3D enabled up to 120hz!
- New ambient sounds, lots of ammo.
- "The lost mission" 8 level expansion.

Cut:
- No more shadows from player flashlight, no more muzzleflash from player gunshots.
- Cut shadows from all projectiles and enemy muzzleflash effects, greatly reduced imp's projectile lightning.
-Some enemies.

Bugs:
-Few blood splats decals, which completely dissapear after save/load manipulation.
-In RoE after use of artifact completely dissapear all gun smoke effects, as well as decals, exept for DB-Shotgun.

Good
- The speed. It chugs along at 120fps without a hitch, no matter what's happening on-screen.
- Load times. Maps are now loaded in a second or less.
- The way zombies dance when you machine gun them brings a smile to my face.

Bad
- Gameplay changes. It's now too easy. Some of the guns seem to pack more punch.
- Excessive brightness.
- Too much ammo. Far too much ammo.
- Armour-mounted flashlight ruins some of the experience (e.g. Engineering escort mission).

Indifferent
- Texture quality. Could be crisper, but I understand the need of fitting everything on one DVD/in a reasonable download.
- The GUI. It's nice that it's properly scaled now but it just looks wrong; something off about it.
- The extras. It's nice to have everything in the one place, but I'll likely never touch them.

It's not the definitive version of Doom 3, it just has a different set of annoyances and glitches to those the original had. A combination of this engine with the original content and gameplay would be pretty damn close.

Do you know which enemies, and how they were changed?

Thanks for the postbacks!

Honestly, I still can't determine if it's worth gettng or not -- are the "pros" listed enough of an improvement to justify buying this? I've also read where the 2004 original can be sufficiently modded to exceed the visual quality of the BFG edition.

Thoughts?

Flashlight shadows look like ass, but we're adding the option anyway.

Who the hell is this ass hat? Did he originally work on Doom3 back in 2004 or is he knew since then? Clearly this is the guy responsible for this screw up, I mean judging by his tweets he has no clue what hes talking about.

Yea seriously, how can you say dynamic flashlight shadows looks "bad"? Also at least this confirms there's a patch in the works. I just hope there's a patch coming to consoles as well. Hopefully one that fixes all the reported glitches and lets console players enable flashlight shadows as well (unless that would break the 60 fps presentation).

Seems like you guys don't now the first thing about software developing.

The shadowing system in Doom3 BFG has been completely revamped, modernized and optimized for speed.
The flashlight shadows implemented in Doom3 BFG yet seem to make problems when rendered (in 3D stereo).
That's why they're turned off as a default.

Adding new, modern functionality that works flawlessly right from the start and still keeping the re-lease date isn't that easy.
Game engines are more complex than "add some code and make it look right".

What was the last game you played that didn't need a patch in some way?

Oh so thats how it is, they will censor the game for one single country (a minority) and then butcher the game for the 3D crowed (again, a minority)

Sounds like someones making top notch decisions here

IF you do not have or do not plan to get a 3d capable system to game on and already have the old version then I'd say no need to purchase the new release -- for PC pretty much the only compelling reason to buy would be the 3d support.

No enemies have been changed in any way! I was talking about some enemies in the levels that've been cut, just a few in fact) But there's one enemy that is defenately absent - a skiny zombie that you encounter in hell level.

BTW I still don't understand why the hell in console games there's no options for fov or some nice effects that may hurt perfomance, but still be added as an option, let the player decide if he likes it or not!!! I'm pretty sure Flashlight shadows on consoles won't hit perfomance that much.

Also no more dedicated servers, which basically killed the multiplayer aspect.

My reaction was based on the problems within the BFG edition, his position in the company as well as his twitter comments which made him look to be incompetent, what he does as part of this patch remains to be seen. And I shall retract what i said at that time.

"This ass hat", as you put it, worked on Doom 3 in 2004 and is in the id PDA.

Do try to drop the hatred and spoiled brat attitude and think with a clear head; you're doing yourself no favours, especially since you're actually right about the flashlight needing to cast shadows.

If he was indeed part of ID back then, then I do retract and apologize for my knee jerk comments. I had assumed this was a green fresh out of college programmer, which goes to show these recent issues at ID are clearly deeper.

In 2004 he actually was quite green as he's just listed among "the interns" (but he has a separate entry of his own in the new version's PDA). At least he is someone who's showing signs of listening and interacting too, so whether you agree with his opinion or not it must be said that it's a refreshing change from the previous more hands-off approach.

Sounds like someone who doesn't understand that the he doesn't belong to the target audience for which Doom3 BFG was released.

You still have the opiton to play the original Doom3 including hires textures/models via mod for free.
If you dislike the modifikations for BFG or don't care about them, just don't buy it and play the original.

After playing the BFG 360 version now for a while, i get the impression that the (visible) changes made for the BFG are very few and could be considered fine-tuning.
Some changed textures and sounds here and there, the new flashlight system, the new PDA design.
Nothing's really that different compared to the original. If people are unsatisfied with the brightness of the game, turning brightness down in the options does the trick perfectly well.
The only thing that bothers me a little are the missing flashlight shadows.

But one aspect i noticed that is really a lot better compared to the original release:
There are way more enemies in certain areas than there were in the Doom3 PC original and the shotgun has way more punch. In the original 2004 release, i almost never used the shotgun because it was rather inefficient. This is better and brings Doom3 closer to the old originals where the shotgun was the weapon of choice.

Oh I understand that, I just want to make sure they are accountable for their screw ups, thats all. And it seems so far that they are, which is a good thing for sure.
