Console can award achievements (PC only)

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:45 am

I found that using console commands can award Steam achievements.
Like give yourself 100,000 gold using the console and boom you got the achievement with no effort.

So why are they allowing this to work?

I don't see why you would find this such a huge problem.

Like on some games cheat codes as you can call them allows you to test out stuff in the game.
For example on a RPG you can test out a build for your character to if it will work before doing it legit.

achievements are a joke to begin with. you can even edit your save files on some games like Mass Effect to give yourself achievement. im old enough now that i dont need to be told that i completed a certain quest or that im doing something right. in real life people arent running around patting everyone on the back everytime they do something right. usually you get noticed when you screw up though.

they should also have more achievements for making mistakes. :) if you die alot or take to many times to beat a certain boss you could get the "loser" achievement.

Most achievements mean nothing  Very few games have meaningful achievements; spoiled by a generation of casual pandering.

Well in Ninja Gaiden 2, there is an achievement for dying 100 times. I got that quite easily.

Agreed. And if you're going to have positive achievements, make sure they're about achieving something. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 had a good one involving taking the garden gnome through the whole game. Doing so makes the game considerably more difficult/tedious and it's a ridiculous thing to do, so seeing it on someone's profile was interesting. Having achievements you can just grind (read 50 books) or having them for doing things you do anyway, like quests, is just stupid.

Even if the achievements were well written I wouldn't care if players could exploit the console to get them. This isn't a multiplayer game; it just doesn't matter. It must be understood that as long as you trust a player's computer to track such things they will always be exploitable; the only thing that might change is the level of difficulty in exploiting the system.
