Constantly Quicksaving takes away from this game...

Post » Sun Dec 06, 2015 6:04 am

I gotta say...while I haven't seen many of the bugs i'm reading about (PS4), one thing worth mentioning is how ridiculously often you have to remember to save your game. It's extremely annoying. I cant count how many times i've lost 30 minutes to an hour of progress for the simple fact that the game puts the onus of remembering to save on the player. I mean at the very least you would think the game would save after completeing or handing in a quest...? I literally just spent 45+ minutes on a quest, finally clearing it after multiple attempts, basking in my glory for all or 60 seconds after handing it in and recieving the next part of the quest only to get ambushed by a random legendary enemy i had zero chance of killing. Of course I died, figuring "ahh no big deal my autosave should be good since i handed that quest in a minute ago". Nope. All gone. This wasnt the first time it happened and i'd been doing pretty good at remembering to save non stop as I was exploring because i wouldnt expect the game to quicksave every 5 minutes (although an option to set up a timed auto save would be a welcome addition to a game like this for me at least) but after I hand in a quest? really? no save? Never in 25 years of gaming have seen something so stupid. I turned it off and walked away. Great game but ffs that's one of the most annoying things i've ever experienced.

Man, are you lucky you weren't gaming 20 years ago.

Seriously though, if you can't remember to push a button to quicksave before rushing at a lethal threat there's no game mechanic that'll help you.

Google is a help:

Under "Settings," then under "Gameplay," there are a few toggles you should flip before getting started in "Fallout 4." The toggles are: "Save on Rest," "Save on Wait," and "Save on Travel" — they should all be flipped to "Yes." There's one more setting while you're in here: "Save in Pip-Boy." You'll want to select the lowest time interval possible (on Xbox One it's five minutes).

But you would have to turn the game back on...

I don't even think about it any more. Sometimes I quicksave immediately after I just quicksaved. I love how they made it the top option in the pause menu for people playing with a controller.

I'm curious, what's the difference between a quicksave and normal save? It doesn't seem any "quicker".

Oh and welcome to Bethesda games where you have to save frequently and it's good to have more then one save file per character in case you encounter game breaking bugs.

A quicksave overwrites the prior quicksave and you'll only have one of them, a normal save is assigned a slot by you and you can have loads of them.

A quick save is a temporary save - there are only a few slots you can quicksave in (in Skyrim it was three, IIRC), and after you fill those slots the game starts overwriting them (oldest ones first) when you quick save again.

It's only quick in that you can do it from in game with a single key stroke (F5 on PC), instead of having to go to the main menu and then saving your game from there.

I quick save a lot because.... just in case.

Since I play on the PC many times I go into the console to save the game so that I can give the saved game file a specific name. For example, if I am done with a settlement build session at Outpost Zimonja, then I simply type in Save Zimonja in the console. Otherwise, it just gets saved as "Commonwealth" if I were to save it in a slot.

You only have 1 quicksave, even in Skyrim. You had 3 autosaves though

It's for quick saving and quickloading on the fly without difficulty. F5, do something. Mess up? F9

Thanks for clarifying. I still have to pause the menu to quicksave on console so I just use the hard save and manage them myself that way. I never trust in auto saves and the like.

Dude, please. Save early, save often, is something everyone should practice in all things computers; whether its a word document or Fallout 4.

Doesn't your Copy of Fallout 4 save for you when you open your Pipboy?

I almost never save and it hasn't been a problem for me.

I save ALL the time, but now I'm thinking that it actually makes the game too easy, being able to save during a fight. Die? So what, just load a save. It leaves you with nothing to lose. I am going to have to restrict myself and make my own rules for saving I guess.

I just turned off all the quicksaves and turned save on pip to at least 15 min if not longer. I guess mid dungeon you aren't waiting, traveling or any of these.

It takes less than 1 second to hit F5 to quicksave. Compared to normal save, where you have to enter the menu, then press save.

Rule 1 for any Beth game: Save, save often.

Sometimes you need to save because you die quick...most times you need to save because the development and testing work svcks. This isn't Witcher 3, get used to it.

It's much better than games that removed the quicksave in favor of autosaves... now that's obnoxious. Besides the game autosaves pretty often.

I've gotten into the habit of quicksaving constantly. If I know I'm about to walk into a building that I've never been in before, I quicksave. If I clear a portion of that building, I quicksave before heading to the next portion.

If I'm hanging back sniping I quicksave pretty frequently too. I learned my lesson about this the first time I went to the Corvega Assembly Plant. I slowly made my way around the perimeter of the whole building and sniped basically all of the raiders on the roof and the catwalks on top of the building. I probably took out 20 of them. Then someone saw me, shot at me, and hit a car. I didn't realize they'd hit a car so I was sitting there zoomed in waiting for them to pop out when the car blew up and killed me. I hadn't saved at all through this entire approach to the building, so I had to start it all over. Of course it didn't go so smoothly the second time. I got in a hurry, got spotted after sniping a couple people and had all of the guards on me.

The game default saves ever 10 minutes. So, unless you are changing that, it shouldn't (corrupt saves aside) cause you to lose all that much time.
