Constructive post about the animation issue of the new video

Post » Fri Dec 13, 2013 8:09 pm

Since the other post reached its limit, I think we should try to constructively discuss the issues with animations of the new promotional video and eventually hopefully we will hear something from ZOS.

This is what I personally thought was wrong with the animations:

1) Turning has little to no animation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MQFxE4AESn4#t=71

2) Running looks very floaty. Its like their boots have shock absorvers or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MQFxE4AESn4#t=57

3) Dragonleap or whatever is called is almost completely static. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MQFxE4AESn4#t=70

4) Combat animations are VERY choppy. It feels like they are missing several in-between animations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MQFxE4AESn4#t=30

5) Overall existing animations are very firm. Feels like I am seeing robots who are having a hard time moving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MQFxE4AESn4#t=28

I think these are the main points. If ZOS is planning to fix them then they should not be releasing promotional videos in the current state. There is no doubt in my mind that such animations are turning people away from ESO.

I agree the current (read: beta status) animations aren't very good.

But we've already seen vast improvement in the animations between this last video and Quakecon, and between Quakecon and the game footage videos before that. Regardless of how theatrical they tried to make it out to be, this video was footage from the beta version of the game. When they release footage in a clearly labeled "release trailer" and they look the same, you can start to worry. Until then anyone not admitting that these are likely to be fixed between now and launch is being dishonest about the situation.

And goodbye to this thread.

1. i see what you mean, but meh, part of the charm in TES. IF they change it, fine, if they do not that is fine too.

2.Don't entirely see what you mean there?

3. Not sure HOW they could change that, though? Maybe Make the wings flap a bit?

4 and 5. I actually agree here, it looks VERY stiff. Hopefully that is only because it is beta footage though.

As said, it might just be a good idea to let this thread/argument die for now until 1-2 months away and we see new game footage.

Animations is not something you can fix in a day. Also this is the first official promotional video with gameplay footage. It is meant to show off the game in its full glory.

Finally, the game is coming out in less than five months with the last two months generally being dedicated to bugs and performance.

Animations is indeed something you can fix in the remaining 5 months and further into the future. They could do with some fine tuning (particularly the character turning animations as you suggested), but for beta gameplay footage they look decent enough.

No its not the first official video or w/e silly label you want to put on it. http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/media/videos Why you keep saying that is mind boggling. This is just another video in the line of past videos. Its just stupid to hold this one video up like its the holy grail and think somehow this is how the final game will be.

ITS BETA FOOTAGE.

I agree with most points. Part of me wonders if some of the animation issues might have to do with have so many people in one area. A lot of games tend to simplify animations when the area starts to have a lot of things happening in the area.

Even if it's not, this isn't really a huge issue to me.

as i mentioned in the other thread, GW2 had TERRIBLE animation in Beta and everyone complained about it, yet when it was released it was fine and actually pretty good animations.

Did you see the fingers of that archer when he released his shot? Looks pretty well animated to me. Also turning 25 degrees doesn't require you to make any wild movements.

(25 degrees is an euphemism)

I really can't understand how somebody can say the animations are ok or good. Cmon...I'm one of those who wants to see this game having a lot of success, but you can deny reality. 90% of people everywhere says the animarions are not very good. In my NOT BIASED eyes, I CLEARLY see the animations are not good. I mean it is not something that you want to say. People is not blaming because the graphicsa are...i dont know...too green or too red or random things. People is clearly pointing the animations thing.

To say it is beta means nothing, cause the animations in this video announcing the release date (I consider this very important for a game) shows the same bad animations as previous gameplay videos.

I really really hope they will polish the animations and we won't be never again talking about this, but cmon...a game released in 2014 needs better animations, want it or not.

I'm not trolling and I think this constructive topic is very good.

To be honest, I prefer the blend of colours that the fire, frost and shock damage produce, I think it's a lot better than say Skyrim which for me was a little dull without mods.

Nope, I DO like the animations for the most part, as said my main problem is it being too stiff looking, something not very hard to fix.

Well, when saying animations, I dont mean the whole "pack" I mean the transitions between antagonic movements. I't s like if there were a lot of animation "lost" between transitions. It's like if for a movement needing 4 moves, you have just 1. Looks really bad.

Not very hard to fix? Let's hope so. I really hope so.

The animations are one thing, didn't anyone noticed the fps drops :( ? In some scenes the fps are clearly under 20 if not 15 for pvp this is unecceptable.

I honestly can't think of a single game that handles that many people on screen without fps drops, massively bad pop in, or a drastic reduction in graphics quality.

Constructive feedback doesn't mean writing "constructive" above it,
but leaving out things like this:

Point out what's wrong an why (in your opinion), say how it can be made better (in your opinion), finish.

Replying to Carde here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1480604-is-it-me-or-animations-are-terrible/?p=23186293

I agree with that it is bad argumentation is the problem. My point is that this bad argumentation (or debate) is born out of a desire to defend ZOS as if it was themselves they were defending. It seems to me that it is the same mindset that then stretches that to concerns over anyone being critical as if they have some kind of personal psychological problem of maladaptive behavior and some insidious desire to see ZOS fail and sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Critics of the animation (or other game mechanics) are talking about problems they are seeing with the game. Defenders of the animation seem to me to be focusing on what is wrong with the critics (though some are being fair and talking about the animations). With this tendency then no matter what constructive feedback can be given the most vocal response is that the critic has personal problems.

How are the developers to then weed through these critiques with that kind of interaction going on? How are the mods here supposed to moderate this - it is slipping in all directions. This is a game people - not a way of life. Not a sixual orientation. As a game it is essentially a product that we are thinking about spending money on. Do you spend this kind of fervor defending critiques of your favorite soap?

To think that of the small percentage of people who would read a forum or reddit and think "oh well someone I've never met panned the animation, so the whole game must be doomed if someone read that - I need to stop that from happening." It is just not helping either side.

Even if the animation improved there is so many other factors that could lead to the games success/demise.

It had animation issues, and fps drops with 200 people in the area, similar to this game.

Didn't really plan on responding to this thread anymore, but since I was directly posted at...

Why does it have to be seen as some sort of attack in the first place? You clearly acknowledge with this line of thinking that these are indeed attacks. I don't think we're defending ZOS so much as the fact that we actually like the game. You're attacking the thing we like and trying to turn it into something you like more.

Anyway, this is all off-topic as hell. Lets not pollute this thread with how we disagree about HOW we disagree, you know? This thread is off to a far better start than the last one.
