FB conversation: unique itemsdaedra items

A conversation I saw on Facebook which I believe has som is a lore key feature :

Jarlath Burns:
Will there be any unique items in Elderscrolls Online like items that are on of a kind that only one player could own?

I dont expect many people to actually know the answer this this question but i'm just curious.

by unique I mean special weapons that are one of a kind that only one player could have at a time if that makes any sense.

Juho Kola:
Well, seeing how the Megaserver has been said to work, I believe such would be very unlikely. Imagine someone earning an item only one person in the world can own, and then suddenly quitting the game - or worse, playing the game but being left unrecognized due to keeping it somewhere in bank.

I've seen people say that if Daedric artifacts (like Volendrung, Savior's Hide or Star of Azura) were to be implemented, they would have to be able to be owned by one simple person in the whole world alone, to "not break the lore".
Seeing how every player is doing his own storyline in a way, though, following the "main story" line of quests, it would not make sense to make them one-person only. The way I've interpreted it, only one "canon" character does all the things the players do, like choosing to aid a small fort or butchering a group of bandits. Giving out the artifacts to only one person would render them unobtainable to others, which would render their story "incomplete" due to no lore reason whatsoever.

Do keep in mind this "personal" story does not exclude other players; in the story's point of view, other players are just random soldiers and mercenaries. And when a player role plays, he takes on the aspect of someone in the world - such as a common NPC, or a hostile "monster".

However, what I would like to see, personally, would be some sort of an item that would be -extremely- hard to get; something only the most dedicated players would strive to obtain, and which could not be achieved all alone. It would serve as a status symbol of sorts.
I believe iconic Daedric artifacts would fit for this, same as I've seen some other "legendary" items in other MMO games.

legendary items are the one. would love to see that.

----

Jarlath Burns:
well perhaps the unique item could be passed on to someone else.

should the one who owns it choose to not play anymore.

i mean like legendary items from elderscrolls like the staff of magnus or Auriels bow.

those are unique items.

and how could you leave such legendary items out of one of the biggest elderscrolls games ever?

those items are one of a kind.

----

Juho Kola:
How would it be handled, I would like to ask. Do you have any ideas on how to design such a system?

It would either have to be a RNG system, or simply that the quest is opened the moment the player owning the item disappears from the game. The game would have to take a subscription approach for that to work, though; you can't be sure about a person's absence if you don't notice a sudden lack of income from his part.

How would you determine a person has gone inactive? A month's absence wouldn't be enough, in case someone has to take an important trip IRL - it would be unfair for him, if he loves the game and his accomplishments in the game.
Not to mention a month would be too long to see an item "rot" in an inactive character's possession, in a complete lack of use. And I doubt most people would just give it away before quitting - maybe in case they might return.

And imagine being at the last meters of a long quest line to achieve the item only one person in the world can own, and then being "outquested" by someone and thus losing all your progress towards the goal. It would be -very- frustrating. I'd be ready to go as far as proclaim a lot of people would downright -quit- the game because of how frustrated they are. Not to mention the amount of flaming it might cause from some jealous people's part, to know they cannot achieve the same no matter how hard they tried - because they would be locked out of it.

Overall, it would break the community. It would be very burdening to the person bearing the item, unless if he has a -very- thick skin towards insults, flaming, and general trolling.

But back to my question: How would you develop the system? Could you reach a compromise that would be relatively easy to execute, while keeping most, if not all parties satisfied?

----

Jarlath Burns:
im not sure im not a game designer

im just being suggestive

i see your point though

but there is still a lot of other systems in this game that make no sense.

but back to the point i actually don't know how that system would work its just a thought I had but items like the staff of Magnus and Auriels bow are unique and I cant see bethesda and zenimax leaving significant items like that out of the game and if they can't make unique items for one person only how would they include items like that?

they said in the adverts that all the legends and stories we have read about in previous elderscrolls games will be in ESO and how would they have thing like that if they cant have unique items and quests.

----

Ben E. Frick:
unique items I like, but the would have to be lootable in pvp and only found in that area aswell. it's kinda hard to add this the proper way... mind blown unique items will drop when dead, can't be put in 'bank' will be 'stolen (disappears) if you stay away to long from pvp. only way I see it...

another small idea, whoever will take seat on the throne, gets ONE unique item for lifetime ^.^ account bound ofc

----

Jarlath Burns:
thats another thing juho

the one who does the best in pvp becomes emperor of tamriel

how would that system work?

if just one person alone gets the be the emperor i dont see how one person alone cant have a unique item
