Could Bethesda do an open world Lord of the Rings?

Post » Mon Nov 04, 2013 2:42 am

Would you like to see Bethesda adapt Tolkiens classic into a TES-style open world RPG set in Middle-earth? Imagine walking from the Shire to Mordor in real time taking on side quests and exploring tombs along the way. Its only a matter of time before we see an open world game in middle earth and I dont mean LOTRO.

Well there is LOTRO for that. And I'm fine with that, it works well enough. I rather see Bethesda do some sort of pirate open world RPG.

I'm sure Bethesda's immersive writing will do Tolkien's universe justice.

Meh. What i'd want to see is a new IP that combines elements of fantasy and sci-fi. Yes, i've been playing Shadowrun Returns :hehe:

Hey! A warning would be nice :stare: I only have so many sarcasm detectors to blow up.

Not before they do a more subtle, gentle and nuanced version of Ico :P

Will you people stop saying "Bethesda to do" as if you were reporting something that had actually happened?

Oh. Wait. Elder Scrolls was created completely whole cloth by the unique imagination of gamesas. Any similarity to other worlds full of elves, orcs, goblins, and such is pure coincidence, as proven by the absence of hobbits.

Although this looks like another drive-by posting, the forum rules still apply. Please post on topic, and, depending on the content of your post, a [/sarcasm] note would be appreciated.

They could, however it's extremely unlikely. They had the chance to do a Game of Thrones rpg, but they turned that down to do Skyrim. They probably would deny LoTR for the same reasons.

I say an open world LoTR is impossible. The books/movies exist. The story is done.

They might be able to make an open world game on that map, with those races and creatures, but there is no story.

Yes on pirate world. Not just pirate, that would be limitting, a 1700s-1800s world, complete with pirates, but also cowboys, ye olde cobblestone streeted dirty towns with factories and child workers, maybe even ninjas, exploring exotic mysterious islands with savage cannibals etc etc.

edit, also this-

Seriously. That is bethesda's "lotr", to then do lotr would be beyond weird, and also redundant, reductive, and boring.

Bethesda needs to branch out and do more, but they have medieval fantasy covered. Just as they have post apocalyptic future covered with fallout. Still tonnes and tonnes of settings left to explore. The two that stand out to me as infinitely badass are the above mentioned ye olde 1800sy pirate and cowboy world, but also an early stone age tribal caveman world. Then perhaps a space exploration/alien planets "solar system" when it can be done justice.

Ahh joy. It's that time of year again, where the most innovative minds in the world visit BGSF and grace us with their fantastic, never-before-thought-of game ideas that Bethesda should do. These people are always well educated in how the gaming industry works, as well as the process behind producing any kind of product and getting it out there. It is very clear that they thought the idea of their topic through for a little bit before posting it. I mean, who would want to post something on the internet that looks like it wasn't thought through? That's just silly.

My answer is no.

I agree Elder Scrolls is very Tolkienesque so it would be redundant for them to make an "official" LOTR rpg. Fortunately the Elder Scrolls is also every fantasy story that has come out from Moorcock to the artistic works of Frank Frazetta and Simon Bisley. It really is anything you want it to be like a Dungeon Master with a blank canvas before him or her about to create a adventuring session for the weekend.

I'm pretty alone here but I think the TES universe is a thousand times cooler than the lotr universe anyway. If I liked fancy pretty elves I'd like lotr, but tes serves the fan of the brutish barbarian way way way better. Orcs in lotr are inexplicably brutish and dumb... and weak and small... what? That's just insulting and illogical. It should always be about strengths and weaknesses, give and take. Sacrificing aptitude in one department to gain aptitude in it's opposing department. Tolkien just made the races he admired really great and the ones he didn't really crap. I fundamentally hate that.

Actually, I found the Dark Men that supported Sauron pretty cool. The Easterlings in particular.
