Could this run Minecraft?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:06 am

So for a while now i've been wanting to get minecraft pretty badly and i would gladly get it but im not sure if the comp im using could run it. So if someone could take a look at my specs and tell me how well i would be able to run it/run it at all it would be greatly appreciated. Specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: Compaq Mini CQ10-600
Processor: Intel ? Atom? CPU N455 @ 1.66GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.7GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

I'll try to find more info if need be. Thanks in advance!

download the free version and see if it runs
  • Minimum Requirements :
    • CPU : Intel P4/NetBurst Architecture or its AMD Equivalent (AMD K7)
    • RAM : 256MB
    • GPU : ATI Rage or GeForce 256 with OpenGL 1.2 Support
    • HDD : At least 90MB for Game Core and Sound Files
      • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and up is required to be able to run the game.
  • Recommended Requirements :
    • CPU : Core2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 (K8) 2.6GHz (Although, Minecraft is single-threaded, and can only run 1 core no matter how many your processor has (due to how Minecraft was coded). So if you have a decent to high speed single core (Pentium 4, for example) you'll be fine.
    • RAM : 1GB
    • GPU : GeForce 66xx or ATI Radeon 9xxx and Up with OpenGL 2 Support (Excluding Integrated Chipsets)
    • HDD : 150MB

Not well. It's actually the RAM, rather than the processor, that is your limitation. Minecraft runs quite poorly on anything with less than 2GB of RAM, because it often demands a full gig itself.

That said, you can download it and set everything to minimum settings to find out for yourself.

I didn't think Minecraft was that demanding. I was almost positive a G1 Gameboy could run that game. But then again, the game never appealed to me anyway.

If it runs on my 2-year-old iPod touch, surely it shouldn't find a laptop much challenge?

I've played that in-browser several times, and it ran alright on short view distance, not so sure about normal

is the graphics card intergrated? if so its going to be laggy, my previous laptop got 20 fps on a good day. my new one gets 700 fps, thats more to do with ram rather than graphics card but having a dedicated graphics card will improve the fps enough to where it will not matter to you.

Intel? Core? i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40GHz, 3.0GHz Turbo Boost
3.86 GB
AMD Radeon? HD 6650M, 2 GB VRAM

And I run Minecraft at 10 FPS after about 10 minutes of playing (the first 10 minutes I'm at 60 fps).

Every computer is different, so be sure you know you can run it before buying it....

Um... I would say: no. However, I guess that might depend on what your GPU is. To find out, do:
  • Start button.
  • Search "run."
  • Launch Run.
  • Type in "dxdiag."
  • Click the "Display" tab.
Here, if you see the word "Integrated" anywhere, especially "Integrated HD Intel Graphics" or whatever, then I wouldn't bother trying to play Minecraft (even if it worked, it would be unbearably slow and laggy).

I have fairly high end computer components, and even for me Minecraft will crash and so forth.

I've heard a few times that the programming for it just wasn't that great, and so even though its a very low end game (at least, too my knowledge), you will indeed have problems like this.

Only if the moons are aligned, the cosmic rays are in balance and the blessings of Notch are on said sandwich.

Minecraft is so poorly coded luck more than anything else decides if it will run.

QFT. You'd think one of Notch's top priorities when it came to troubleshooting would be to use some form of LOD method or at least smooth out the process of objects being loaded into the zone, but no, all we got (at least when I last played the game nearly a year ago) was some ugly view distance modifier that did absolutely nothing to help reduce choppiness unless you had a pretty good rig. And from what I'm hearing, what with all the content additions, the performance is gradually getting worse.

You....don't know what Minecraft is do you? Every block is generated as you enter a nearby chunk, then add to that, the ai running, random biome/structure generations, then weather graphics and etc, sky, clouds, blah blah blah.

Minecraft is a resource hog if you aren't careful.

The Graphics aren't fancy, but it's still a hog because generating everything on the fly isn't easy. For instance it is possible to lag modern rigs with Simcity 4 (A nine year old game) by improving the AI and pathing of all those thousands and thousands of Sims living in the City. Graphics aren't the only thing that uses power.

Also, I see your game and I'm not going to play it.

My suggestion for running Minecraft on a slower computer: don't explore too much. The more you run around the more world has to be generated, and this can be taxing, particularly with less RAM. However you should still have tons of room to explore - I'd suggest making a http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Map_%28Item%29 early on and then mostly sticking within its boundaries. If things are fine you can expand outward.

A ham sandwich could run Minecraft.
The system specs aren't terribly high, but if you want it to run well you actually need a pretty good computer.

My computer can run Crysis at high resolution with most of bells and whistles available for DX9 . . . and it can't run Minecraft with "fancy" graphics unless I want occasional chugging (although it no longer seems to crash with this any more). My wife's laptop is a step down from my desktop, but even though it runs Skyrim at minimum settings nicely she can't turn on smooth shadows in Minecraft without it crashing.

From the guy with a Daggerfall avatar....

Yes Minecraft has given my laptop more problems then OB which I can only run comfortably at Medium. That's what happens with a poorly optimized game I suppose.

Poorly optimized? That's a bit under exaggerating it.

26.95 by my last check, but I suppose rounding down is always useful.
