A couple of things I want in the game, becoming a town guard

Post » Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:52 pm

A couple of things i'd like to see and discuss how they would be implemented, becoming a town guard and destroying the thieves guild.

Firstly, becoming a town guard. I'd love to officially join the few, the proud, the town guardsmen. I thought of it as I became a Thane the other day and thought, being a Thane dosn't suit my character but I would love to be able to sign up as a town guard, busting up criminal scum, skooma busts, arresting drunken brawlers and lowlifes, all that jazz. It would be such a cool way to pay the bills so to speak, instead of chopping wood and picking vegetables and stuff. Perhaps you get paid based on how many crimes you stop or bandits you bring to justice?

Another notion I had after this thought was, how kick ass would it be to take on the thieves guild and all the other criminal scum in Riften? Perhaps you and Mjoll meet up in the tavern in the corner to discuss bringing an end to the criminals in this rotten city and begin a descent into corruption, intrigue and danger as you investigate and take down all the criminal organizations in the city like the thieves guild, the Black Briars and maybe the corrupt guards.

Maybe you start the quest after becoming a town guard and fight your way through corruption within the system?

I just feel like this needs to be in the game. I'd pay money for it.

Don't help the Thieves Guild in the first place would (theoretically) make them slowly rot to death.

But yeah, I like that idea of being a town guard (or any sort of the "Skyrim's way" of law enforcement). Maybe become the guard captain with a bizzchin' armor that just scream "I AM DA LAWL!!" as you paint the skooma's den red with blood and severed heads.

After destroying the Dark Brotherhood i'm craving JUSTICE!!!

But yeah, i'd take captain of the guard (after working my way up for a long time) over Thane any day. Being a Thane dosn't do it for me if i'm playing certain characters.

I'd feel bad about slaughtering the Guild, since they're not killers themselves. Maybe a way to evict them instead? Or lock them up, maybe.

Both ideas are good, though I kind of expected a quest to destroy the Thieves Guild being available considering there was a quest to destroy the Dark Brotherhood if you wanted. Seemed a bit strange to not have one for the TG. As for joining the Town Guard, that is an awesome idea, you could defend the town from bandit raids and dragon attacks. Only problem would be a questline, but then again I'm sure someone could come up with a good story for it. I wonder if someone has started modding something like this...

Well, maybe not slaughter them. Maybe some way to arrest them non violently if they don't protest?

But when i'm craving JUSTICE!!! all criminal scum must pay.

The problem with being a Guard and stopping crime is that a given town only has about twenty-forty named NPCs, meaning that actually having crime is pretty tough. Unless you have someone named 'Thief' or 'Murderer' random-spawned, sneaking around, which would just be silly.

What I have been doing though, is roleplaying as a Town Guardsmen. Recently I made a Nord who uses light armor, with a sword and shield. Got Sven the Bard (from Riverwood) to be my follower, and then used the console to give me Falkreath Guard gear. And I pretty much spent levels 2-11 exclusively hanging around Falkreath, doing whatever quests I could find, clearing out nuisances, and of course trying my best to protect the citizens from random vampire attacks. I'm interested in moving on to either Markarth, or perhaps Riften but I'm having trouble thinking of how that would work, roleplay-wise. I could say I had a falling out with Siddgeir (I intend to join Stormcloaks, eventually) but he always greets me so warmly whenever I walk past, as if I'm the only person he likes...

There is already a random thief and murderer (a vampire).

Although I liked the guild and the quests, I wouldn't mind an option to destroy the Thieves guild,

As for being a town guard, I'm fine with out it. I'm guessing it wouldn't consist of much except wandering the streets at night and catching petty thieves and killing skeevers or something. I picture it being the the Companion's radiant quests.

Yeah, town guard is 90% role play and 10% job for money. I just think it'd be neato to officially join the ranks.

And as for the thieves guild, I don't hate it either but if you want to be a warrior of Justice and destroy the Dark Brotherhood it's going to kill you to let the thieves guild and the Black Briars walk all over Riften.

I was thinking along the line of a Skyrim's version of Judge Dredd that employ excessive violence in his quest for order. This means anyone who go against his view of order will die painfully in a fire. It could be a set of daedric quests given to you by the newly resurgence prince Jyggalag (DP of Order)

Yeah, perhaps "town guard" isn't quite the right term. I mean, I picture a guard being an "on duty" job - you have a schedule, and spend every day patrolling the streets and/or standing at attention at a post for 8 hours. Not really the kind of thing they'd have as an official player activity in an RPG - it's kind of boring. And restrictive.

Something between town guard and thane, however (not sure what you'd call it).... where you don't have to stand a post five days a week, but instead get various missions from the Jarl or the Guard Captain (kind of like the current bounties, but more official).

...of course, in the end, that just sounds like a different-themed Fighter's Guild. Or a "good" Thieves' Guild, if you're infiltrating criminal organizations. And unless you made it a wider area thing (like, "High King's Troubleshooter", who works throughout all of Skyrim), you'd rationally need a setup like that for every well-established region (Whiterun, Solitude, Markarth, Falkreath, Riften....) That'd either take a bunch of work, or be very copy-paste between each questline. Hrm.

i agree with this and some of the quests could be that you set traps for them and catch them in the act and suprise them and then arrest them and once it is down to just a few you raid their headquarters

and later on in the game if you change your mind maybe you could bust them out of jail

As far as the guards go, no thanks. I'm an adventurer. I cant be bothered to stay tied down to a hold. And I most certainly don't plan on taking any arrows in the knee anytime soon...

I like the thought of taking out the thieves guild though. How about some epic Skyrim horse scene chases? Or just chasing on foot.

Thief: (Ha! I'm getting away.) You can't catch me in all that armor, nord!

Dovahkiin: Od...Aviing! :mage:

Thief: Huh? What does that m-

Odahviing: Yol Toor Shul! :flamethrower:

Thief: :ahhh:

I'd pay for this as well, great ideas in my opinion. My only input would be to maybe tweak the guard idea. Being a guard would be fun I agree, but it is pretty one dimensional and would end up being a bunch of radiant quests I assume. I think it would be awesome to have a guild introduced into the game that is about serving the law. Maybe call the guild The Hand of Justice or something less hokey, but I imagine you could use that guild to enforce justice all across Skyrim, not just in Riften, where all the scum seems to accumulate. Within this guild's quest line, taking out the Thieves Guild could be one of your major quest chains, while doing other odds and ends. Maybe throw in a new shady organization as well.

If you are going for a freebie update, the town guard idea is certainly more feasible, but if this is going to be a big dlc, I'd jump at the opportunity to have a good guys guild. I mean we already have 2 guilds for bad character types, and you could make an argument for the Dawnguard as being "good", but that is strictly where vamps are concerned, Isran doesn't really care about anything else. The Companions are glorified mercenaries and The College has a keep to yourself mentality, so seeing a guild that is actively pursuing righteousness would be a completely awesome addition to Skyrim, especially considering it is completely absent.
