Crafting: General Discussions

I love crafting.

It's a great thing to craft your very own items, gear and weaponry. Going 'round the world, looking in towns for various metalstraps and cloths, searching for the materials that will make your finished piece outstanding. Something TES has done very well, in my oppinion.

Coming from that perspective, I have great hopes for crafting in TESO. Of course, at this point everything is speculation, but nevertheless, I want to hear your ideas on how you want crafting to be like in TESO.

Personally, I want something "extended", something that's not simplicity itself. As an example, lets craft a shield, a fairly weak and low-level one. You would require several differently bent metalpieces for the frame, some wood for the base, and a few leather straps for the wielder to hold on to. As well as a few nails to fasten it all. I'll sum that into a list.
  • 3x Curved Iron Pieces
  • 3x Wooden Planks
  • 2x Leather Straps
  • 10x Nails
All that makes a Reinforced Wooden Shield, lets say. To me, something as simple as this would make a good game great. Why? Because it adds realism. To many others (as is the MMO universe) this will just be a pain in the bumside, whilst many will also say that it's a useless use of data. Data that could be spent on something else. Don't get me wrong, I get this, and I'm not expecting 3D objects of each material (á la Skyrim), a simple picture and name is all that's required. But I still want loads of materials that make sense. I'm comparing this to items crafted in other games, where to make a chainmail chestpiece you require...
  • 5x Copper Bars
Do you see where I'm getting at? The spirit of TES is in the details, and to me this is one of those places.

Yes "the spirit is in the details" its just than none of those details ever made it into TES crafting..

If anything i would want the crafting to be like Vanguard, best mmo crafting to date.

I second this,Vanguard crafting is second to none, especially since SWG is dead and gone, nothing matches Vanguard.

Something that I particularly like about alchemy in the Elder Scrolls games is that you have to discover what mixes well with what. Makes the whole experience of alchemy a lot more rewarding and I hope they'll keep it rather than a shopping list like in World of Warcraft.

Hopefully Smithing will not be like Smithing in Skyrim.

Agreed... Also note that I specifically want to see alchemy from oblivion make a combat where it matters what material you take with you. Also make it so that weight doesn't mysteriously increase when you make things. That's not physically possible. x)

I'd really like Smithing to become a combination of how Alchemy and Enchanting is handled.

Experiment with materials (not the tasting part, but being able to blindly put ingredients together)
Can obtain recipes
Can deconstruct gear to learn the recipe for it

I don't enjoy crafting to a huge degree but when I do it I want it to be a bit detailed. I plan to be a Ranger type so I want to fletch my own arrows. This should require some wood, feathers, and, steel, and maybe some glue. I also hope to be able to fletch arrows while in the wild so long as I have the needed materials at hand. I don't like having to go to town all the time to craft.

i like crafting but i hate having to farm materials for it. It's either that or spend a ridiculous amount of money on the materials from the auction house. i don't have an answer to this, but i wish there was a way to make it still challenging to create the high level gear without having to farm or blow your money.

An in depth crafting system is indeed a great thing to have but we will not be seeing anything remotely close to SWG, Vanguard style in this game since it isn't a player driven economy where majority items come from players.

not being able to grab every item from someones house is really no information about the economy. i haven't heard any information about an auction house or anything of that sort at all.

They have end game heroic dungeons and raids. Where do you think gear will come from?

....people don't seem to understand what an economy is. crafting system has not been talked about, auction house has not been talked about, vendors haven't been talked about.

obviously gear comes from dungeons but what does it matter if there isn't an auction house.

and obviously you're jumping to conclusions by stating that it won't be in depth. Again no info released to back up your notion that it won't be a player driven economy. stop assuming things.

People wanted SWG's crafting system in SWTOR as well. It's fun to dream.

What do you think of the crafting system implemented in http://youtu.be/TBSUgKbKaWs?hd=1&t=24m15s? Looks interesting IMO.

Planning to try the beta this weekend.

It looks okay but nothing like Vanguard.

Vanguard crafting is a whole other game inside the game.It has it's own quests, armour, items and takes just as long to level up as adventuring.

I Love crafting! I play EQ2, and it has a good crafting system in that when you make an item, it requires a certain amount of skills as you have to counter faults as you go. In other words, it isnt 'craft-omatic' ie, put in it the ingredients and you have an item. You can fail. Also, EQ2 has a big harvesting system, and harvesting as crafters know, is relaxing (until that ugly mob comes after you); in fact it can be mermerizing. But EQ2 fails where common sense is required, as you may find elephant meat in a nest, or make tea out of dog spit.

Elder Srcolls has always been the best for those who love to harvest because most of the plants are like their real counter parts. The night shade really looks like night shade and has poisonous properties (among others). This is OUTSTANDING. Also, in Skyrim, you can't make armor unless you have tanned hides, smelted metals, and other things that are appropriate and logical.

Therefore, if the MMO developers can combine these two wonderful attributes and create crafting opportunities that allow us to craft naturally and realistically, and also to be able to achieve a superb or miserable product depending on the skills, we would have the ultimate crafting game. As someone said above, crafting is a game within a game. EQ2 has extensive opportunities to craft, its own quests for crafters, and the ability to obtain special crafting gear that expands your capability.

Crafting is an integral part of the game economy and allows people who don't care for combat as a way of life to live and thrive within the game. A well thought out broker/vendor system that allows the sale of products is necessary and after listening to the interview with Matt Firor, the MMO Director, posted on Game Informer, it seems clear to me that he intends to address much of this. He spoke about the fact that Skyrim is like a platform to introduce single players to the MMO world as it incorporates a small UI, has followers much like real-time other players, and stated that the 'shopkeeper or vendor in Skyrim could very well be the guild member who is crafting for you in the guildhall.' It seems clear enough that he understands what is needed to make the game great.

Look forward to seeing you all in game!
