Crashes BEFORE startup

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 10:54 am

Hello, I just installed Rage on Steam (although it was purchased through GameStop's Impulse Client). After letting it update, I've started it up a few times, but it just crashes on startup every time with no reason why. Windows tells me that it had to close Rage due to a problem (unexplained) and will look for a solution (nothing so far). I can get the splash screen to open, where I can click "start game" or "reinstall", etc. and I've tried reinstalling, which opens Steam's "Validating Steam files" window. It always say that it failed to validate one file and will reacquire it...then nothing further happens. Steam support told me to try reinstalling (with no success), and then said I have to contact the game maker's support.

My laptop is an Asus with an Intel Core i7 1.60 GHz and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. So far this is the first game I've had problems running.

Any ideas?

I think you need to update your Radeon drivers.

Thanks for your suggestion. According to Asus, I have the current drivers (they haven't updated with newer ones since late 2009 for my laptop). And AMD tells me to go to Asus for the driver updates. But I know that AMD makes newer drivers, especially for non-laptops. Will those work for Radeon Mobility laptops?

I found the links to AMD's Catalyst Mobility Download from the pinned Rage Support in the forum. I'll let you know soon how that went.

Thanks

Yeah, I honestly don't have much to suggest w/re to mobility versions, but I know my drivers are up to date and say 8.9something and I know a lot of people had problems with the earlier versions so that's where I'm coming from. I have a lower model number (non mobility) so I think you should be able to run the game but drivers from amd are a pita.
