If you are Crashing or Freezing - try turning down shadows.
From waht I can gather they are resource hogs and done by the CPU (Console style) not GPU (PC style).
I was having constant crashes but have not had one since turning shadows down.

My not be the great cure all, but could be worth a try if nothing else has worked.
