Crashing on launch

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:36 am

I am just gutted by this game's behaviour.

I have been a gamer for over 20 years now (yes, I am that old) and most of the games I have played are RPGs - and therefore I am not new to bugs. All RPGs tend to have a bug or two, or ten. It goes with the territory.
This is my all time worst experience ever with a game, no contest. I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition, but I have only managed to play 49 hours so far since the game came out thanks to being unable to play my game at all so much of the time. And the worst bit is that these have not been FNV bugs - oh it has some, don't get me wrong - but on the whole the game has caused me no real trouble. The problems have all been Steam, a client that I did not want, and did not realise was going to have the power to kick me out my game, lock me out of my game, prevent my game from launching etc...

Having spent two days this week trying to sort out the mess that the last Steam update made, I finally got the game back up and running again last night.
Today suddenly, the game crashes when I launch it. Nothing on my computer has changed since yesterday, so I just don't get it.
This happens regardless if I play this on-line or off-line.
I have tried the following:
- validating / verifying my game files
- defragging my Steam files
- reinstalling FNV
- once again validating my game files

Result: none

When I start the game it gets past the launch screen that has all the details on Game Engines etc, the moment it gets to the screen of the Mojave desert the game crashes to desktop.
Please help. I am just so disappointed I am ready to give this game up, even though I was really enjoying it.

I think there is a problem with the updates, drivers and the FALLOUTNV.exe.... I think the updates are being applied without enough testing, it always seems its after an update that new problems pop up.

Hi Ygern,
I found that the launcher made some very unfortunate choices on my installation, and I think this has caused a lot of grief among would-be players.
I believe the launcher enables vsync by default.
99% of people should not enable vsync.
The launcher selected some strange letterboxed resolution for me, and then applied 4x AA.
I disabled AA and increased to my 1680x1050 native resolution.
Distrusting the thing completely by this point, I manually selected 'medium' preset (mostly to ensure medium water-effects) and then manually extended all the view distances longer.
Except grass (I typically turn grass down).
Also, make sure in your ATI CCC you are not forcing vsync, AA or AF before starting up the game.
Ideally CCC would be set with all application-controlled or high-performance settings.
You must have ATI, right?
Most folks with nVidia are very happy after the recent patch(es).
Anyway, hopefully re-examining your setup will help - but you said you were playing before, and I know how frustrating that can be.
All my crashing stopped, personally, once I got rid of all my playing cards...
But hopefully you can get things going,
Keep us posted.

I'm afraid I'm not ATI, I have an nVidia GTX 260. And my rig is pretty decent, FNV selected maxed-out settings for everything when the game installed.
I have had no in-game crashes at all while playing off-line, its been a purely Steam-driven issue for me. I know that this isn't the case for everyone, but my computer has handled the game itself quite nicely.

Your point about the launcher does make some sense though. The confusing thing is the game had no problems yesterday. How / why can the launcher suddenly now be causing such a huge problem?

[EDIT] just to clarify, I can't get the game to launch at all, so I can't get rid of cards in an existing savegame or even start a new game.

Ok, I have tried messing around with the graphic Options and believe it or not, the problem is not vSync. I didn't think it was as I use it in my other games, but anyway.
What has solved the problem for me for today at least is forcing it to play in a Windowed mode.

Seriously, what is going on? Why on earth do I suddenly have to play in a Windows box?

...just to clarify, I can't get the game to launch at all, so I can't get rid of cards in an existing savegame or even start a new game.

Yes I understand, which is totally harsh since you said you had played 49 hours already!?
That's no Level1 first-look, that...
Give us a DXDiag then (just in case a fresh set of eyes can spot something).
But I found my own game both looked better AND played better after the recent patching...
It's very strange.
Almost forgot! The Steam Cloud.
(It's so you can play the same game on different computers at the same time, it synchronizes them all.)
This sort of thing upsets me, because my savegames in my personal Save Games folder are not safe, they exist at the whim of Steam.
If you (like most folks) are simply trying to get the game to run on a single PC, disable The Cloud from the FalloutNV tab.
Then, disable it for all of Steam from the main settings tab.
Certainly this must help your cause when trying to troubleshoot your Steam difficulties.
It's crazy to think that Steam Cloud is enabled by default for everybody, LoL.
I mean sure, it's amazing they can do that...?
But I don't want it,

There apparently is another big patch on the way, so hopefully it will fix what appears to be driver compatibility issues with the main game exe. I had the launch problem, updated video drivers and it ran... then today its not doing it again, which appears to be related to the steam update...so... need another update.

I do have up to date drivers for my graphics card, and it didn't seem to be a game-stopping issue yesterday. But there is no doubt that the latest Steam update managed to cause more trouble than it solved problems.

Ever since the update fiasco I have been playing off-line, so this should not be a Cloud issue. I think it is one or both of the patches / updates that is conflicting with graphics cards, to say nothing of other software like Advance SystemCare.

Thanks guys for your help so far. I will post a DXDiag on the off chance that it is something else.

Ok, here's the DXDIAG for what it is worth.
If there is a problem it is almost certainly a display / graphics issue bearing in mind that switching my settings to run the game in Windowed mode has sorted the crashing on launch problem.

As huge and open ended a game like fallout 3 is, there is bound to be glitches with AI scripting and quest lines, it would be a bit unrealistic to have a game developer test a game of this size for every possible glitch they can find. The longer they take testing and retesting and doing every thing imaginable, the more money that is being used... Thus the need for patches.. they onyl have so much money before they run out.

The problem your having sounds like the same problem I am having... BUT I have seen people post who are running computers much like mine, even with windows 7 64 bit...((mines pro, but shoudnt be much of a diff) with high end multi cores.. high end GPUS.. and say ther are running fine and dandy..Goes to show how game programmers and troubleshooters cant predict every problem.. specially when the assortment of users to hardware environments are pretty much limitless.

Yeah, I agree. I have never played an RPG in my life that didn't have a few bugs in it. But that said, when I play off-line I have no problems at all and no crashes.
The malfunctions have almost without exception been related to Steam.

Whatever caused this particular glitch though I am not clear about. I see no particular advantage, indeed only disadvantages, in forcing a game to play in Windowed mode. So it just doesn't make sense that this fixes (or at least provides a work-around to) the problem. But it does.

OK, well, playing it in Windowed mode means that at least I can get back to playing the game.
Only now the graphics are protesting and are flickering every so often.
Its not something I can screenshot, the effect it a bit like watching one of the old silent movies of the 1920s when the film flickered.

Do I need to roll back my graphics card drivers?

It's worth a try- so is the supposedly obsolete d3d9.dll fix (trying with and without rolling back the drivers). With the newest patch that fix does cause some people problems but other people say they still need it to play the game. You have almost the exact same hardware setup as my roommate does (except he's using Win 7 x64) and he is able to run the game with those drivers and without the dll patch. OF course those are the 64 bit versions of the drivers which, despite being contained in the same installer, are not identical. So yeah rolling back the drivers and/or trying to see if the d3d9.dll fix improves behavior are the only two things I can think of since it is not purely hardware incompatibility with the engine.

Oh yeah one of the key differences between how a game runs in windowed mode vs. full screen has to do with the graphics card settings profile that gets used. If you haven't already, you may want to create a game specific profile in the nVidia control panel for Fallout New Vegas (select falloutnv.exe when it asks you which program). Set performance to high but also check to make sure it is not forcing certain filter types by default and compare it to your desktop/global settings.

Yeah after seeing how very specific combinations of hardware and OS can result in completely different experiences by slightly varying even one component not normally so strongly tied to performance- I'm starting to wonder if maybe Emergent made a very prescient decision to offer up the technology for sale. If they are having this much difficulty expanding the engine's compatability to the wide range of currently used windows OS versions and to relatively current hardware setups then maybe the engine has reached the end of its useful life regardless of whether or not one even talks about the graphics quality.

Good luck on getting it to work though - don't be thanking me yet for what amounts to a barely educated shot in the dark. If that does work though I will accept cookies or a bottle of Redbriast 12 year or Green Spot (hard to find those in the states for some reason)

Try running the game without the 1.2.0 patch

I had a similar problem, my game didn't crash but while in vats I dropped to 0-5 fps making me have to quit the game being unplayable (aka 'crash' the game myself)

What I did was:

1) Tell Steam not to update the game (double-click Steam icon in taskbar, select "Games" and "View Games Library", right click on Vegas, select "Properties", select the "Updates" tab and choose not to have updates automatically installed.

2) right click on Fallout.exe in steamapps, click Properties, then Previous Versions, copy the version dated October and put it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas replacing the original file.

Considering your post is dated yesterday, this might well be your issue. It might work, if not, nothing is lost - just continue and let Steam update the game. :) It worked for me.

Ignore this post, the problem was with ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated and the load order in the .ini files. Op if you are having the problem still try setting the Archive installed by that mod to load last in the list of archives
