creation kit can't get started

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:23 pm

i installed the creation kit about an hour ago and cannot use it.
i go to data click to load the three masterfiles skyrim.esm updates.esm and dawnguard.esm
it gets about halfway through loading skyrim.esm and it says
assert
file:c:\_skyrim\code\tesv\tes shared\misc\bgslocalizedstring.cpp line:1566 localization: error opening or reading strings file
abort retry ignore
i hit retry or ignore it pops up
warning masterfile: localization: zero entries or epty block sizeread from strings file strings/dawnguard_english.strings. strings will be missing
yes to all will disable all warning for this context
yes no yes to all
if i hit yes or yes to all the program stops working and closes

You're not supposed to load updates.esm, I believe that's causing those problems.

I always load Update.esm along with Skyrim.esm and I've never had any problem. People are complaining that they can't load Dawnguard.esm so that might be the reason.

I`m getting the same errors. Dawnguard needs both the skyrim and update esm to load since it needs them as parents. After clicking ignore to the first error and yes to all for the second one the cs crashes every time. Hopefully they find out what`s causing it.

assert file:c:\_skyrim\code\tesv\tes shared\misc\bgslocalizedstring.cpp line:1566 localization: error opening or reading strings file
That means the string files aren't available to the CK. Add Dawnguard.bsa to Skyrim\SkyrimEditor.ini's sResourceArchiveList2.

Update.ESM: Dawnguard has it as a secondary master, so it's going to load whether you set it to or not.

I was having the exact same issue and found this thread. I verified the tools cache, and placed the line as suggested under the [ARCHIVE] section. Subsequently when launching the CK with Skyrim, Updates and Dawnguard selected the program loaded correctly with only the typical Yes to All errors that have always been there. I've included the modified ARCHIVE section under the spoiler tag. Note: do a double check for any typographical errors as this will prevent this solution from working.

Cheers!

i just checked the spoiler copy and pasted the entire thing over the old archive list and it is still doing it. i appreciate the help but like i said it is still doing this. but it does now allow me to just load skyrim and update but not dawnguard.
so we are making progress.

Progress is good! Thought I'd ask since I didn't see above whether or not you verified cache for the CK. When I did this I got a messge saying the files were valid (no change that I could see), but then when I relaunched the CK from Steam I got a Windows 7 message asking me to allow Steam to launch the CK. which I had never had to do before so something got updated. Maybe that will fix whatever's going on with DG for you!

Cheers!

Make sure the added lines to the editor ini are pasted in place after you verify the cache for ck. It failed for me too and crashed again but doing the cache check on the ck it removed the lines from the editor ini so they needed to be re added and it worked.

Heya Top, sorry if I sound like a broken record, but I wanted to confirm that after you verified cache and defragged that you confirmed the Dawnguard.bsa text was still in the SkyrimEditor.ini file per Lord Banewrath Sunblade's suggestion.

If after you verified the cache and confirmed the text was there and it still didn't work properly then perhaps it's time to go to the next level of drastic and delete your local file content for the CK via Steam, reinstall the CK and then add the Dawnguard.bsa text into the new SkyrimEditor.ini file with the fresh install???.

Best of Luck!

It's always advised to include Update.esm.
