TV crime shows

Post » Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:03 am

Lately, I have been watching some of the crime shows on TV, such as NCIS, Law & Order: SVU, and Criminal Minds.

Not only do I like some of the great stories I see on each episode of the mentioned shows, but I like the character developments and plot twists.

Do you watch crime shows? Which ones?

What other crime show do you suggest I should check out?

Psych is very lighthearted, but still quite awesome. Probably one of my favorite detective/crime/drama/comedy shows.

Monk was another lighthearted detective/crime/drama/comedy style of show that I enjoyed.

Person of Interest is kind of science fiction a crime show, I think it's a pretty good show. The episodes can be formulaic, but the stories are intriguing and fit together well enough for me not to mind.

I don't think of myself as an "I recommend" type of person, but some of my favourite (modern) crime shows are-

NCIS (which you listed)

CSI

Castle

Body of Proof

Lately I've gotten into Criminal Minds, and I used to like Bones, but over time it started to feel... inane.

Oh, and when I said modern, I meant currently on-air. I grew up watching Cagney & Lacey, Hill Street Blues, Hunter, Quincy M.E., then later Profiler, Nash Bridges, and I'm sure that I'm forgetting many.

For some reason I found these shows so typical and predictable. Because every special unit needs a humorous yet outsider nerd angel with alternative / punk style. Really, dude? Really?

NCIS is my "favourite" in this category which is the triumph of mediocrity for me in almost sense. Especially the tiresome and disturbing characters getting on my nerves, but I guess you can't please everybody...

Last but not least somebody mentioned Monk, which was indeed a nice show. Tony Shalhoub really caught the character, actors in minor roles were okay and the cases were coherent with the style of the series itself.

If you want the other side of crime, you couldn't go wrong with breaking bad. (Walter Whites kind of a dike though.) True story: My chemistry teacher got caught cooking meth this year.

I've never been able to stand American crime shows, but I love me a bit of detective drama. Lewis and Foyle's War have been my favourites recently, but I'm also partial to Poirot and Sherlock Holmes (not the ultra-modern one - that's good, but something different) as well as Jonathan Creek.

Actually, I did enjoy the first season of The Wire when I watched it a few years back. Been meaning to watch the rest ever since... But then, that's nothing like any of the other big US shows...

Quincy and Castle are favourites of mine.

Enjoyed the early series' of Dexter as well. Quite fond of CSI Miami and NCIS. I've heard a lot of good things about Wallander as well but not gotten around to watching it yet. Touch of Frost, Cracker and Silent Witness are also all worth a look.

While not focused on crime I adored Lie to Me as well.

Seeing as it's not mentioned yet I wonder if "Bones" counts

Yes. Cops was my childhood. I know now that as long as my life is not leading me to end up being arrested wide-eyed and half naked in the parking lot of a sleazy apartment complex, I'm on the right track.

Double yes. Just one month and change to go! I can't contain myself.

I'm the same way, despite being American myself. Traditional crime shows bore me. I always point out the tropes you see in all crime shows and it's too predictable for me, and thus boring. Detective shows are a different matter, though. And even then, I don't like any American detective shows, yet I can't name any others. I've been meaning to watch Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, as Patricia Routledge is one of my favorite actresses, but I don't know how good it is. From the DVD covers for the show, I've given it the nickname "Hetty Wainthropp Scowls."

It was so much better than the Mentalist.

I used to watch Columbo with my dad, I remember Johnny Cash and Leonard Nimoy were in it (in different episodes).

They are all pretty much the same to me. Cookie cutter shows with different location and characters.

I don't know Hawaii Five-O counts but that's the only crime series I watch semi-regularly, unless Burn Notice also counts.

I did watch The Mentalist for a bit, but it got stale for me. One thing that made it unique for me was how local it was, being in the Sacramento area but it didn't really portray it well IMHO.
