Critique: too much like other MMOs?

Post » Mon Mar 11, 2013 12:24 pm

I apologise if there's another topic that brings this up, I wasn't able to find it.

From what I've noticed so far, there appears to be a lot of common ground between the Elder Scrolls Online and other games such as WoW. I'm not saying that it is necessarily a bad thing, it certainly won't feel awkward for MMO veterans, however, I've a couple of uneasy points:
  • The loss of first-person perspective, which will make the game feel exactly like all of the other MMOs. Would it be possible to locate enemy characters behind you through a system of visuals that display which side you're being hit from? (Similar to Halo) Not only would it be more immersive, but we'd have to consciously look over our shoulders for that assassin.
  • Armour visuals. At the minute, they look a tad too ornate for my liking. What ever happened to the simplistic iron and hide that we had in Skyrim? And this is long before Skyrim even happens.

What do you guys think?

i think this game has very little to do with wow outside of the things every single rpg has. the fact that people keep bringing up wow amazes me. at least compare it to daoc, thats probably the closest. overall though i feel this game will be quite a bit different than other mmo games. it will be more mmo than TES i think but it has to be otherwise it would just be TES with multiplayer

There are going to be at least 300 pieces of armor than in Skyrim, and first-person WILL EVENTUALLY be fully done.

I don't think either of your points has much validity.

  • First person is not gone, they're working on it.
  • I'm sure low-level armors will look like the crap that they always have. You don't start by showing off those, you show off the fancy high-level ones that your artists spent more time on. A better point of comparison would be Skyrim's Elvish or Orcish armors, which are pretty ornate.

A couple of things.

First, have a http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg.

Second, the only things wow and ESO have in common is they are both fantasy MMORPG's and their IP's both started in 1994.

Welcome to the forums! See above for your fishy-stick!

First of all, they have been saying time and time again that first-person will be in and they are working on making sure it is like Skyrim. It would be a massive mistake for them to overlook this and it seems they have learned that.

Secondly, the visuals have improved dramatically since it was first announced and I think they are finally coming into their own. They will likely continue to improve and adjust the art-style as they move into beta. I am not worried about the armor. It is a little less high-rez than we're used to from Skyrim, so they beef up the visual style a bit to compensate, but it looks good to me. Could I nitpick a few things? Sure, but right now this is the least of my worries.
