[REQ] Crossbow

Post » Sun Oct 31, 2010 4:08 pm

So i was in a lecture this morning, and ended up looking up some mod ideas on my iPhone. I found a pretty cool http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11454 mod for Fallout 3, which was part of the STALKER mod. I'd really like to see this idea brought into New Vegas, but i think it could be taken a little bit further, what with all the new additions to the game;

- A new crossbow could be added to the game, the aforementioned model could be used however the model and textures could be better, and better scaled so it fits into the characters hands a little bit nicer.

- Weapon mods could be included, such as a red dot sight or tactical scope, which would upgrade from the basic ironsights. There could also be mods that upgrade rate of fire, or reloading speed.

- There are no darts in New Vegas, however we wouldn't need to stop there. Poison, concussion or paralysis darts/bolts have already been used in Fallout 3, but has anybody thought of an explosive bolt? I am not thinking of a huge explosion, something similar to that of a slave collar.

- The mod i mentioned made note that bolts would not stay visible in a player when they were hit, and it would be much better if you could see them.

If anybody is thinking of this, i would love to know because i think this would make such an improvement to the game.

Not something up my alley to take on as a project, but I certainly would love to see it happen -- particularly with crafting, poisons, and different ammo types... this would be a perfect fit for NV!

It says on the download page that the bolt issue has been fixed. It shouldn't be too hard to port it to FNV. It's a nice idea. Silent but deadly. ;)

I'm thinking about trying to do it myself, but i have no experience of some of these things, are there any posibilities of help? I am quite proficient in modeling and use of photoshop, but i have no experience in animations, sound, scripting etc, I don't know how to piece the whole thing together.

Now I'm thinking Railway Crossbow...oh yeah. Basically a crossbow made of scavenged components firing railway spikes, or maybe pencils, I don't know.

Or someone could port that mod, I've got my hands full at the moment, but it shouldn't be hard. Just get permission and use the resources to make a NV version.

How about one that could be built?

Medical Brace
Surgical Tubing
Duct Tape
Scrap Metal

At the work bench you can also turn pencils into bolts.

Umm i think it would be tougher to model a 'home-made' crossbow, not only would you have the variation in details but you would have to work within specific geometry, and try to piece it together in a plausable way.

If i would go to the effort of making this then i would probably focus on making a modern day, tactical crossbow. Something that looks deadly. I might give a model a go, and see if it gets the ball rolling.

My personal vote would be for the "modern" looking version, placed in the world as a unique along with some basic ammo.

...but with it being unique enough that ammo isn't on any loot or vendor lists, but rather having to craft new bolts - and that being the only way to get more.

At least that is what -I- would like to see... of course YMMV. :)

Yeaa i'm taking a look at this Fallout 3 crossbow mod, or trying to.

I have the esp, the meshes and the textures. I have never edited a weapon in this way, so firstly how do i make the file work in New Vegas? I can open it as a preview in the NV Geck, and everything seem's fine, but if i try to load the mod with the NV esm it just stops. Am i supposed to edit this file somehow to make it work in New Vegas? Some help would be much appreciated.

Well, if it works... I'd love to have this.

I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this thread, to see if anything comes of it. I've often wondered why there aren't -any- crossbows or hell, hunting bows, in Fallout. It seems to me that, between tribals and pre-war crap... you'd have seen a few.

Yea i would really like some help with this. I have been trying for the past hour and a half and have come to no success. I downloaded FOMM, and have been tweaking the mod in the hope that i will make it useable in the new vegas geck, but either it refuses to load the NV master file because it still requires Fallout 3, or it crashes for some unknown reason.

The file is split into 3, the weapon, the arrow, and the 'cell' (i am presuming this is a location created which stored the weapon in Fallout 3) Obviously this cell requires models that will no longer be present, so the whole thing should go, but i don't know what to do about the other items. When i look on the subcategories in the Weapon part, certain bits like 'sound' say 'master not loaded'. I am presuming the weapon was set with weapon sounds and animations that were in Fallout 3 for a weapon, but not in New Vegas.

Anyway, i'm completely stuck trying to work out what i have to do, so i would really appreciate some help, this was supposed to be a 5 minute job.

Exactly. There are Spears so why not Bow or Crossbow?

Making one at the bench may not be all that good but making bolts at the bench is a good idea.

If a crossbow gets made, we should try and get a regular bow in there too! :)

As cool as that would be, that would be a great deal more work as I understand the animations involved...

I would love a crafted crossbow with pencil ammo :D that would be so cool, the ammo would be hard to find....unless there is a pencil factory or office building somewhere in the wasteland...but who cares its still cool :D

what they could do is use the spears ability to pin people that would be nice. maybe a version of the spear could be used for bolts instead?

Okay i have the model in the game. The crossbow and bolts have come our correctly, however there are a whole load off issues, down to missing animations etc;

- The character thinks the weapon is an unarmed weapon (presumably), upon equipping, there is no requirement for ammo and it appears to stick out of his right hand,
- In the GECK, i have no projectile effects worth choosing, as there are no dart guns in the game.
- I am unsure what equipping animations to use, and how to set them (the fallout video below has the crossbow using a sniper reloading animation)

I like the idea of using a clip instead of putting the arrow down the sight, the main reason being that the latter would require a custom animation, but another bonus being that i can add a weapon mod that upgrades the clip size from 1 bolt to 3. This could be quite interesting for using explosive rounds, however this is just an idea.

I have no idea with any of the options i have to set for Weapons within the G.E.C.K, i have no experience modifying weapons and there are no preset packages. I have looked through the GECK wiki but i can only find tutorials that cover getting the models into the GECK (which i have done) and the ones which cover the options in weapon modifying only touch statistics, and not visual aspects or animations.

Just a few pointers, or methods would be very helpful, because i don't know where to go with my first issue.

Keep it simple, you have to learn how to walk before you can run. Explosive bolts and adding mods may look nice on paper but you should try and get the regular crossbow to work in the first place.

Reading your post it looks like you've left quite a few things out. My advice would be to examine the original mod very closely (make screenshots of stuff that you may need for further reference) and then try your best to duplicate it in the NV Geck. Since you're not making it from scratch you should take advantage of the existing mod. The major issue would have to do with new projectiles but like I said above you should try to make it work first and then worry about details later.

Yea i did.

The crossbow works in the game, the new sniper rifle animations work fine with it,

Projectiles is an issue, there are none worth choosing from, and when i tried to make my own with the bolt, everything seems to work but the bolt is not visible whatsoever,
