CrossFire and SLI

Post » Tue Jan 11, 2011 7:46 pm

I did a search for crossfire on this forum and the results came back with nothing, so I'm sorry if I missed a discussion regarding this. That being said, Fallout 3 had a problem supporting multi-core processors on both the CPU side and the GPU side. With multi-core processors almost being standard now, I think that multi-core support needs to be flawless this go around with New Vegas. Fallout 3 was gorgeous while not using a SLI or Crossfire setup, so I could imagine how nice it'd be when it's utilizing up to 4 GPUs (edit so not to upset starforce9 :ahhh: ). I know that not everyone has multiple processors on their graphics cards, but with DirectX 10.1 cards (ie ATI 4870x2) crashing in price, a lot of people may be moving to them. How does everyone feel about making sure this support for multiple processors is in New Vegas?

I for one hope they scale better, my 4890s need a challenge.
4 GPU processors.

Thats redundant by the way. (Graphics Processing Unit Processors)

My CPU isn't too good, but it is a quad core, and I want the game to fully utilize them, and to not crash without ini tweaks.

I am not sure how much better it would look, unless you are running at 2560 or so resolution. I could max out either game at 1920 on a 4970 and get 60 plus FPS.

lol. He's saying if you have good graphics cards already having more or better graphics cards wouldn't really impact the look unless you hooked it up to something with a lot more pixels.

I'm on Console, so whenever people start talking computer specs, I tend to start glazing over and hear feint piano music.

It would be really nice if they did support these two even triple Sli (I've seen it on some rigs, can you say amazing?) without it being totally necessary to run the game at a relatively good fps. It would also be great if they integrated this with support for Nvidia's 3-D components. I too play on 360 but if I had the money I'd buy a new rig just to play Fallout : :):

Yup and some people don't realize that a game has limitations and having the latest and greatest graphics card trying to exceed that limitation is foolishness. You can't exceed the maximum set graphics in the game and even cranking up the resolution won't boost things too much.

Not really. Oblivion and Fallout 3 both scale up very well with better hardware. I played Oblivion on my old rig that was built in late 2006 and then I played it on my new rig that was built in late 2009 and not only did it run much better but it looked much better as well. I also played Fallout 3 @ 1280x1024 and then I played it @ 1920x1080 and it looked like a totally different game.

I think it's a better strategy to aim for the lower or average machines and not waste a lot of time and resources on 'super' machines with the hottest doodads. People are not upgrading their computers like they used to, thank goodness (although MS is trying really hard to force this trend to continue with their slow, massive .NET framework).

Most games won't start supporting SLI or Crossfire until sometime next year. There are a few out there now but not many. That why I set my computer up with a 1.8g Nvidea card now and I will install a second one in a year or so when I have the free money to do so.

P.S. Fallout does look amazing @ 1920x1080 though. :hubbahubba: Just like you're right there in the gameworld, (or as close as you can get without being on a halodeck)

I run it at 1920X1080 using a Nvidia 9800GTX+ 1 gig GPU, and the details on the rocks and whatnot really stand out. The only problem with super setups like this is that there's not all that much in the game that gets a lot of benefit from really high resolutions. That's the main reason I haven't gone to SLI yet, since I wouldn't gain all that much by doing so. I will be within two years though, since at that point this rig will be 3 years old and games will likely have advanced to the point where I need a GPU upgrade anyway.

Higher Resolutions will look better than lower ones. That I agree with. And, some graphics cards look better than others. For example, ATI tends to look more rich in colors, but not as sharp and crisp as Nvidia. It is subtle and a matter of preference to what you like.

However, I doubt that any graphics card running at a particular resolution would look dramatically different than another graphics card at the same resolution on the same game at the same settings. Subtly different? Sure. Would you prefer one over the other? Maybe.

Piano music? I just hear elevator music.
This is generally how I determine if my computer works:
Push power button. If it goes to the windows dashboard - it works
If it does not: :brokencomputer:
Repeat first step.

FNV needs to work for high-end CPUs and GPUs in high resolutions.
But it's musn't look too bad on low- and middle-end resolutions.

Because FNV musn't get a console game.

Yeah, I really wish the PS3 had more ram, because then I wouldn't have installed the firmware update which got rid of OtherOS, and I would have used it as a gaming rig.

I really wish that fallout 3 didn't have higher requirements than oblivion(I can run oblivion fine on medium, but I can't even run FO3 on low, it just crashes)

I love playing games on 3 screens. It's really immersive. You use the middle screen for center view and angle the 2 side screens at a 45 degree angle.

Question is, does the side screens actually show a screen as if you moved the "center screen" to look in that direction? In other words, semi-peripheral vision?

You have to widen the FOV but essentially yes. I used to have 3 CRTs back when I did this but now I only have a single flat panel, to be remedied by the time New Vegas comes out I hope. I used to play Quake 3, RtCW, with a FOV of 160.
