Crysis 2: Great Expectations

Post » Mon Aug 09, 2010 6:42 am

The majority of console gamers have never heard of Crysis before, because Crysis and Crysis Warhead were only for the PC.

Crysis 2 is without doubt highly anticipated in the PC market, but as for the consoles, Crysis 2 will have to greatly impress the gamers in order to make a name for itself in a market where Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Halo rule the sales.

PC gamers will certainly have very high expectations for Crysis 2, as the first two Crysis titles were absolutely showstoppers. But could the expectations be even higher for the console versions? Not only will Crysis 2 have to run on moderately outdated graphics processors of the consoles, it is expected to have better graphics than the first Crysis titles. It will be a great challenge, like making a car more powerful while improving fuel economy at the same time.

I personally have very high expectations for Crysis 2, as it has been in development for some time now, and must achieve or surpass the standards that Crysis and Crysis Warhead had set.

To the PC gamers: do you have great expectations for Crysis 2 as in terms of being better than both of the previous Crysis titles? And to the console gamers: do you expect Crysis to set the new bar for the best graphics ever? If not the gameplay as well?

I have moderate expectations for Crysis 2 on the PC. It is my last chance to Crytek for them to impress me, since the first two Crysis games were lacking in proper support. :)

Lacking proper support? I think that giving out 3 patches for the original and 5 for Wars is good enough, and supporting the modding community is also a big plus for Crytek.

Let me ask you this. If Crysis Wars had 10 patches, but they all fixed 1 out of the 50+ the game actually had, would that still be considered proper support?

The game wont look better than the original on consoles, it'll be a blend of high shaders, medium objects and low (and i mean very low) textures at 1280x720. But it'll probably be the best looking game on xbox without a shadow of a doubt, and maybe ps3 too (although the ps3 takes ages and complete dedication to get the most out of it, but even that falls short of crysis 1 by a long way).

Crysis and warhead are definitely both very good games, admittedly i would have loved crysis 2 to be a real jawdropping sequel (the equivalent graphics that crysis had in 2007 would have just blown everyones minds), but it is very obvious that crytek want more return for their investment. In the end they are a company and i can't begrude for it.

Crysis 2 i expect to be a very good game and almost certainly worth a buy as long as the single player story is awesome. Multiplayer is not so much of a priority or even interest for me.

But the best thing to come out of crysis 2? the cryengine 3 by a long way, i'm hoping more developers license it as it has the potential to really revolutionise cross platform games. I'm fed up of the UE3.

We still have yet to see what exactly the CryEngine 3 can do on the PC. Sure its great on the consoles and we have seen that for literally 18 months, but when will we see a true comparison between engines? Its about time we got some footage of the true raw power of Crytek's awesomeness. :)

Or at least a "real" demonstration of the game on other platforms.

I cannot post the link, because I don't have one.
I have seen (and played) it myself @ Gamescom.
They had 3 multiplayertables, one for each platform with about 8 or 10 consoles/pc's at every table.
By the way, when you think it looks great in 2D, wait until you see the game in 3D. They had a demonstration of some 3D images, it looked amazing.
Also I have seen some live creation of a level in both 2D and 3D which was displayed real time on 3 screens (PC, XBox360 and PS3).
I can understand that this real time conversion process will help a lot of developers. And if more developers start working with the CryEngine3 sandbox, we can expect more great PC games too, instead of worthless consoleports.

@Tony

Thats wrong buddy.

I played both versions ( costs 3 hours of waiting in the damn line to get there twice)
Only the PC and XBox 360 Version were playable on gamescom.
2 Tables Xbox and 1 Pc. Dont ask why.. makes no sense...or maybe they want to "hide the pc table?... anyway to see both versions compared.. its like comparing the classic doom to half life 2.

Anyway the Ps3 version of the game is not to be seen so far.
Not even exclusively for magazines.

Is that so? I must have been sleeping. I know i played with both the Xbox360 and the PC versions, I could have sworn the third table was PS3 on the day i was there (day before the opening of Gamescom for the general public).... I am digging in my memory, but I can't remember clearly.
Sorry if i made a mistake, but I am not sure if i am wrong or not.
Luckely I didnt have to wait in line ;)

I DON'T have high expectation for Crysis2. I played the original, and WARHead. Those games were phenomenal, and there's very very little room for improvement, it was almost perfect,.... but now Crytek/EA are changing everything to accommodate console(Halo/CallOfDuty) fans,...
They are going to fail, and end up ruining all the original ideas that made it great in the 1st place.
That's what happens to a franchise when the owners gets greedy(remember circuit city???)....

@ Flabernat

The great thing about Crysis 1/Warhead was that these games used very much of the potential that modern pcs can offer. Including grfx and controls + gamedesign.
If yiu even want to surpass such an experience with the successor there would only be one choice: PC exclusive again.

So everything that bothers pc gamers about Crysis 2 is related to the console/mulitplatform development.

I have no reason to not be optimistic about it.

I'm not going to base my entire opinion about the game on just the footage we've seen.

Even the levels we have been shown in Singleplayer were cut-down demonstration levels that are not necessarily indicative of the full SP levels.

If the game is as fun and as good looking as the original but never surpasses it in any way, it'll still be the best game since crysis 1.

@ Flabernat:

Apparently there was plenty room for improvement considering how much they've done for Crysis 2. Modular nanosuit, improved environmental destruction, improved A.I., more weapons, etc. I must say that I am thoroughly pleased with what I've seen so far and have no doubts that this will become my new favorite game upon release.

Return to Crysis
