CTD In specific locations tied to large save games?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:03 am

So here's my issue:

I have a level 43 mage with 130 hours played and a save game size of just over 9meg. I get CTD whenever I try to fast travel or run near Falkreath and DB Sanctuary. VANILLA SKYRIM this problem has nothing to do with mods!!! Its been happening since 1.4 for me....

I started a new character and ran to falkreath with no problem!

Is my main toon doomed to dwell in eternal limbo? NOOO!

Heres all I have tried to fix it

-sound fix
-unoffical skyrim patch
-sleeping at home for 30+ in game days to reduce save size
-getting rid of my companion
-running in low quality graphics
-turning off AA
-low quality shadows
-reinstalling skyrim
-varifying cache
-running directly from .exe
-tweaking memory settings in .ini
-updating drivers
-turning off quicksave/autosave and only using 'hard' saves

None of this has helped.... Anyone going through the same thing maybe in differant locations? I feel like the more you play and the bigger your save gets the more the game breaks (this doesnt sound familiar at all)

Same here, I can go to specific locations in Skyrim and get an immediate CTD. Here's what my log says:

This is a guaranteed crash every time. Come on, Bethesda! There's got to be a fix for this!

did you change you ugrid in the .ini files above 5? I know this will cause an issue with large save files or playing for long periods of time. if this is the case put your ugrid back to 5 also if so the save file will NOT convert back on its own. it will stay with the higher setting of ugrid. check out (do not argue) webside. they have a text file that you can use run as a bat file ingame that will correct save files that were made with a higher ugrid setting. that that that. I hope this information helps.

second question is are you all useing 1.4 or 1.4.27? and if so do you have the construction kit installed? if this is the case the constuction kit adds a script folder in your data folder. they are most likely for 1.5 or 1.5.26 and because archive invalidation is automatic they will be placed into the game. this would cause a script crash with a 1.4 skyrim.esp

Never touched a ugrid setting...... and this problem (for me anyway) has been going on since 1.4 I am now latest version 1.5.26 I believe.... and still the problem persists. No construction kit, nothing... just straight Vanilla.

I started a new game and I am getting CTD'd right when I approach the very first town. Now I have to go through all my mods to find out which one is causing it if any...

Large save games?
My Breton guy (600 hours / Level 68) has all homes etc, loot up the wazoo, and way too much money...
My savegame files are approximately 12 MB ea.
So 9 MB would be about right for your guy at his level...

Apparently the latest Skyrim patch breaks savegames made with earlier Skyrim versions.
I have been told that newly started games (with this v1.5.26.0.5) should be just fine though...
Sounds kinda messed up to me!
I mean the game was released more than 5 months ago... right?
You'd figure it'd be good to play by now.

Same problem here. I CTD when travelling just north of Shor's Stone near Stony Creek Cave and the cave just west of it named Cragslane Cavern (I think that's its name). Only since Patch 1.5.

Incredibly annoying and since it has been happening, I've just not been playing Skyrim... Can't seem to get any solutions or even anyone with the same problem until I saw this thread.

Bethesda should really replace those coding monkeys. I've never seen a game be [censored] up so frequently and so consistently by the very company that made it.

Previously I would consistently get CTD's once my save games got to 6.5MB. I've since reset my ugrids from 9 to the default 5 and I've been able to continue playing for a week without any CTD's and my save file is now up to 7.5MB. It's a damn shame cause I was loving 9.

Yeah I just stopped playing as well ... I did start a new guy but I can't bring myself to start over when I didn't even finish on my main :-\

On a side note a bethesda dev did contact me a while ago (maybe 3 weeks now) and I sent them my savegame and dxdiag..... Hopefully they are looking into a fix for next patch *fingers crossed*

If any of you are using ValsCraftingMeltdown.esp... remove it, replace it with similar mods 1 for meltdown 1 for arrow creation. I was constantly crashing when approaching Mzulft +Imperial camp + Cave with the dead breton area, I tested my fast travel to Mzulft many times after removing Val's mod, I haven't crashed since.

I'm just saying it worked for me and may not work for others. Mzulft was my CTD testing ground. Hope this helps those who are running Vals mod.

If you bothered to read OP you would see I used no mods.

In other news I just went on playing my main and totally avoiding Falkreath and the DB santuary...... I will report back if I encounter any other CTD at a differant location. It still svcks knowing that one of my favorite quest lines is unfinishable for me now /cry

Having the exact same issues you described. My game CTDs everytime I try either sanctuary, although there have been RARE exceptions. Also started glitching just after killing Gaius Maro, and starting killing my game just after starting Cure for Madness.

I had this issue on a very old save (possibly patch 1.2? was long ago) that would CTD walking west from Silver Moons Camp, north of that bridge north of fort greymoor, something in that area on that save was crashing me, never found out what it was, although it was so consistent that I could do a countdown from 3-2-1-CTD as I walked along the same path I had walked 5 reloads before. :P

Made a new character, same mods and everything (more evidence that it is NOT mods that cause this) and I could run all around Silver Moons - Fort Greymoor area with not even a FPS stutter. Load main save, 3 steps forward, boom, CTD. Every. Single. Time.
Would be nice to know exactly what causes this issue, as I have dumped a few characters since then that did the same, in other places. Makes you wonder wth could even do that.
I try not to get attached to any character I make now, as every single char I have ever made (excluding my latest, for now) has come upon some game breaking bug.
Skyrim isn't a game to be played, it's only purpose is to train everyone how to troubleshoot errors.
I have learnt more about PC's since Skyrim than all my knowledge before. (Maybe an exaggeration)

Bump for boredom.
Its also amusing reading the general crashes thread.... Always the same 3 things mod conflict, Black screen w/ looped audio, and the location based CTD

An update on my situation: Been playing my mage alot more just totally avoiding Falkreath and DB sancuary.... So far so good. So my problems is definately location based and possibly cause by a bug in the DB questline itself.... Just a guess.
