Cursed items.

Another great feature you do not see in MMOs anymore are cursed items. In Meridian 59, about 10% of all magic items were cursed.

One famous one was a Ring of Asphyxiation. You might come across a Ring of Invisibility, put it on and instead of vanishing, you start to choke to death. After a very short period of time you life would drop down to 1 HP. Only way to get it off was the Remove Curse spell.

Cursed items also came in a variety of ways.

You might get an item that actually works but has a negative effect. ie. Sword of Flames does 10 extra points damage, but unknowingly to you, if you critically hit or miss it explodes doing 100 points to everything in a 10 foot circle, including you!

You might get a chest piece that makes you immune to fear effects, but whenever in combat you lose 25% of your armor defense.

There can be many varieties to curses, which is why they can be so much fun.

Anyway, do you think they would be good for ESO?

Was amazing yes, and we've seen similar things in TES. The boots of Blinding Speed for example which make you fast, but also mostly blind, hahaha!

I don't know whether I would want something like that. There seems to be enough danger without adding weapons backfiring on you. At lower levels, anyway. If you knew some item could do enough damage to kill you outright, no one would pick anything up unless it was for selling. For higher levels and more difficult dungeons, it might add something to the game.

In Morrowind there was a sword called Fury. Whether it was intended to or not, it permanently damaged your armor skills. It was supposed to be a constant effect drain type of spell. It blinded you by 20%, drained all armor skills including unarmored, and granted fortify attack 20 points. Before it was patched, it caused a lot of players problems, since it was easy to pick up and if you equipped it by accident, you had issues.

I like this idea a lot.

Sleeping Tree Sap Potion, restores 100 health but makes you sleep. Lol

I preferred the cursed items that summoned an angry Dremora Lord when you picked them up.
