I'd completed the In My Time of Need questline by killing Kematu and his band of wicked Alik'r warriors. (Or were they good Alik'r warriors? It's all so confusing.) Then, a few days later, I returned to Whiterun only to find two of the Alik'r - the same ones who had tried to slip into Whiterun the night I learned I was dragonborn - standing by the front gate. They had nothing to say to me - not surprising since I'd cut up Kematu like I was serving sashimi - but they didn't leave, either. It was, frankly, a bit embarrassing for the three of us every time I passed.
Day after day, week after weak, even as the seasons began to change, they stood there at the gate with their hands in their pockets, and all the while the Whiterun guards were whispering to me: "Those guys . . . they have curved swords. Curved. Swords."
Then one day, when I hit level 30, I entered Whiterun in the morning, shortly before midday. I headed towards the smithy as I wanted to see if they had EVER gotten that Ring of Smithing in that I need TERRIBLY, when off to my left I hear a woman scream, "It's the middle of the day!"
Well, not quite. But I didn't see the need to shout about it. So I glance in her direction and I see them. Two vampire thralls and a master vampire.
Of course, the entire city pitched in to destroy the blood-svcking menaces - but in truth it was the whispering sound of three swords (my Sorrow Katana and the two curved swords of the Alik'r) that brought down the living leeches. Even Amren, the one-hand trainer, was down on one knee by the time the vampire and his thralls were nothing more than the next day's conversation.
(You know, what I mean, right? "Someone needs to do something about these vampire attackes?" "Yeah? And which one of us in this conversation is the city guard?" Yeah, right then.)
Anyway, they're still standing there, like they were hired by the Jarl to, oh, I don't know, maybe fight the vampire menace? I nod at them when I pass. I doubt that they've forgiven me rendering them unemployed, but at least they have a purpose now and it's a fairly critical one. The next time a guard says something about the vampire menace, I'm going to suggest getting curved swords.
Curved. Swords.
