No Daedric Quests - Is It Possible?

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 11:10 pm

On most of my characters, I do all of the daedric quests. If I do one, I do them all. Because of that, I've never really been able to play as a true "good" guy. I'm thinking about playing through as a "good" vampire, but if I do, I don't want to do any of the daedric quests. The problem is: can the main quest be completed without starting Mora's daedric quest? Is there anyway to get into Blackreach, and obtain the Elder Scroll, without Septimus? I know you can merely start his quest and get the scroll, and then never finish it, but I'd rather not have it in my quest journal at all.

Is Septimus essential? If not... kill him and take the attunement sphere and the cube from his cold, dead hands.

Even if he is essential, I do know that I could see the two items in his inventory before I talked with him. I didn't steal them because I didn't want to break the MQ and the Herma Mora quest, but I guess you could just take the items. However, only murdering him should break the quest for good - the dead guy won't be able to tell you to harvest all that blood.

A problem will be that things such as "find the dog near Falkreath", "investigate the shrine of Azura" and "go to the shrine of Boethia" pretty much are forced into your questlog. This will be annoying after a while, since there are so many of them.

I don't think you need to ask about rumors, unless the DLC changes that, so I should be able to avoid the Azura one. I'll just have to be careful. Boethia's gets stuck in your journal if you kill the guy who attacks you, or locate the shrine. I should be able to avoid those. As for the dog, only the two guards on either gate trigger that conversation. It's possible to get into town through other means, by jumping over barriers and so forth.

It's a lot of work, I know, but it's just something that I wanted to try to do.

Boethia can also get stuck in your journal if you accidentally read the book. I ran into it during the Vaermina quest (so there's no issue for your challenge), but I am sure that the book lies around in other places as well.

If you don't do the Vaermina quest, you cannot become the Thane of Dawnstar.

And the Clavicus Vile quest is forced upon you whenever you approach Falkreath once above level 10. A guard will walk towards you and force a dialogue onto you, concerning Lod and the dog. I think I avoided talking to Lod for several levels then ( = one less merchant to sell my stuff to), and the quest is now broken because the stupid dog won't even spawn. :)

You will also need to be always aware of the Vigilant of Stendarr in Markath, because he will also approach you if you come too close.

Oh, and there's a random encounter with an afflicted who will force the Peryite quest into your journal.

About avoiding the rumors topic with innkeepers... you can avoid them, yes. Unless you happen to want to cure your vampirism at some point, because I think that Falion will only be responsive after you've heard about him by some bartender.

Just because you have the option of starting a quest once it is in the journal, does not mean you have to do it. Not sure if you can go after the scroll without agreeing to help Septimus, but just speaking to a daedric prince is not going to commit you to anything. Get the scroll and never return, you are stuck with the Attunment Sphere anyway, and some of us got stuck with the Runed Lexicon even though we did the quest.

I don't like having extra stuff in my quest log.

This is the real killer for me, the fact that you get stuck with so much stuff in your journal that you don't want to do and never intend to do but have no way of refusing. Many quests can't be deliberately "failed" in any way, and with at least one it doesn't seem to make any difference as the other NPCs involved will still treat you the same no matter what you did or didn't do. It's very frustrating and it becomes a real drag trying to play when you're constantly trying to avoid this book or avoid that NPC or not go to a particular place. There are entire towns you can't go to if you want to avoid certain things - go to Riften and Brynjolf accosts you in the pub or the marketplace, go to Falkreath and eventually you can't avoid the "stray dog" issue, go to Markarth and you're eventually forced to deal with the Forsworn Conspiracy or have it cluttering up your journal forever.

And if anyone knows any way to keep "Talk to Brynjolf about his scheme" out of your journal once he does force his way into your life, please let me know. I can't seem to find any way of dealing with him that doesn't result in him just saying to come see him later if I change my mind. I am NOT gonna change my mind, can't I just tell him to sod off and be done with it?

You can only avoid him. He won't be in the pub during the day. When talking to the merchants, you just have to be quick and run away before he stalks his way right next to you and begins talking. I did that for the entire game, but ended up talking to him for the main quest and getting "listen to his scheme" stuck in my journal. I presume you could just run right into the ratway and ignore him, but you'll still have to avoid his stalkings. Sadly, once you have the quest, nothing can be done.

Sorry but you about lost me a 'Good Vampire'.

I had one character, and evil Dunmer assassin, who, in addition to joining the DB, did all the Daedric quests.

None of my other characters do them, other than Azura (sometimes) and Meridia (sometimes). Most character do not do any of them. Course it means I have those stupid journal entries forever in my logs, but I just have to get over that.

What I hate is that most of the Daedric quests trick you into starting them. So, if I was not Meta-gaming I would have to let my character start the quest because he/she wouldn't know what it is, then just refuse to do the quest after it's started. Even at this point you end up doing something evil before being able to ignore the quests. So now my characters never go to the museum, never talk to the smith about a dog, never volunteer to help check out a house, never help a begger find his master, never help out Orcs, never talk to a prisoner, etc. and etc.

It's not a contradiction. Being a vampire doesn't bring an attached morality.

it's kind of hard to run away when he walks into the blacksmith's shop in the middle of me talking to Balimund, forces his way almost directly in between us, and starts his scripted crap as soon as I tab out of the dialogue options with the blacksmith.

Unless you are willing to stay out of the marketplace entirely for most or all of the time it's open, and also stay out of the inn for most or all of the time the market is closed, avoiding him doesn't appear to be an option.

If I knew how I swear I'd mod him so that he never leaves their stupid cistern HQ, at least for characters that don't want anything to do with joining the TG.

There is a pc mod that sets a minimum limit to pickpocketing and Theft to trigger the Theive's guide quest. I found it on the workshop and liked the idea.
